My Ipod served me quite well until it got stolen. The obvious things to do to optimize your Ipod are to get good headphones, but also to get a good seperate warranty. It may cost you an extra 70 bucks, but when a warrants covers three years, the Ipod breaks every six-eight months or so and you get a new Ipod upon it needing to be fixed for the third time, you have a pretty good deal.

But, in general, all these MP3 players need to be made a lot more durable. I'm technologically retarded, but if I could use the same discman for six years without ever needing to get it fixed, why shouldn't the same be true for an IPod (aside from battery issues.

definitely. even the ones with a replaceable battery still have a 1 or 2 year lifespan max

I vaguely remember a documentary in which they tested some products on how they automatically deteriorate and break down over a specific amount of time.

An MP3 player is much more complex by virtue of the fact it uses a hard drive rather than a simple laser to read indents on a CD and produce those into 0's and 1's. More complex systems have more parts that can deteriorate faster.

Battery life is the main issue though, the limiting factor.

I got a philips and it works fine, sound quality is good. I've had a lot of people say they've had problems with ipod, don't know about zune tho.

And, iphone is the biggest crappiest cash grab ever. Just had to state that.
