yep, album of the year. Not necessarily number 1 for 2007, but certainly in the podium for 2007.
There's also like 20,000 bands who sound like Dream Theater, 20,000 bands who sound like In Flames, 20,000 bands doing the power metal who all sound similar, etc. this makes no difference, it's the cream of the crop that makes the difference and this album for me ticked all the right boxes. It's almost impossible not to sound a bit like another band or have subtle (or strong) influences from someone else in this day and age with so many bands and genres out there. I listen to alot of genres and this album didn't feel stale or "heard it all before" kinda sound. When an album sounds just as great with the 50th listen as with the 1st then you know your on a winner and I couldn't not give it such a high rating, hope that makes things clearer.

That still doesn't mean it deserves an Album of the year 'award'...

well it does in my books, that's why i gave it. I don't think i can explain myself any further than that. no doubt you have a different opinion for your album of the year contender, and i must stress it's a contender, the year isn't finished yet! would you like to share your album of the year? i might agree/disagree but do you give a shit what i think? probably not, but by all means post and the metal community will debate.

Your line breaks are all messed up, dude. You should seriously fix them. It looks unprofessional and it messes up the flow of the review.

Album of the Year shouldn't be taken literally anyway, folks. Anyone who's been reading this site for a while knows that reviewers have multiple Albums of the Year. It's not a literal distinction. For a metalcore album, this one is killer. I got it to review and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Definitely deserving of a high score.

i don't mind listening to as i lay dying. i just like looking forward to bigger and better things in song structure than a breakdown.

This paragraph at the end of the review peeked my interest!

"Not a weak track and a journey from start to end. This is in some ways the new era of heavy metal that incorporates both the past and the new, put simply, we have a very fresh and enthusiastic album from As I Lay Dying. Disillusioned by today's heavy metal scene? Sick of everyone copying each other? Bored of cheesy power metal bands? Tired of operatic metal with too many keyboards? Hate overlong, boring progressive metal? Want to remember why you listen to heavy metal in the first place? Get An Ocean Between Us, it's that simple."

I've felt that way about every genre of metal more often than not. I'm not a huge fan of metalcore but there are bands in the genre that I enjoy listening to. I've never heard "As I Lay Dying" at all. I just always kind of threw them into the pile of worthless, trendy, Hot Topic band file. I picked up the CD yesterday (based upon Joe's review) while I was out and so far Joe's review is really damn spot on. It is a good CD. :)

As for the CD of the year comments, you guys have to understand that everyone has an opinion of what they like and listen to. Music is completely subjective. If Joe feels it's worthy of that title then he's certainly entitled to express how good he feels the CD is. :dio:

Agree, this album is extremely above average for metalcore. Not a top ten entry for 2007, but still highly enjoyable. The latest trend in metalcore seems to be to go in a more heavy metal or thrash direction, and this works very well in AILD's case I must say.

Just got this album for real cheap, and I must say it's a pleasant surprise. This isn't simply metalcore, it has other elements like traditional heavy metal and Thrash. Vocals are a strong point the clean vocals are perfect and avoid sounding "emo" for a lack of a better term. My Favorite track so far is "The Sound of Truth" the guitar harmonies and guitar work and solos are just way too damn good and even catchy. This is the first As I Lay Dying CD I own and it might not be the last one...

This album is ok but I would like it a lot more if the clean vocals actually had melody to them >.>

I agree that this is a pretty good album, maybe even great for metalcore, but considering other albums scores, 95 seems high. Like, Arsis's Celebration of Guilt got an 89, and the highest anything by Testament got was a 95. Now obviously not all the reviews are by the same person, so comparisons between them can't really be made. Anyway, I would say more like 87, because the only songs that stand out to me are Nothing Left and The Sound of Truth . Just my take on the situation.
