"Healthier Than Thou" people? People who will tell you that pretty much anything you eat that isn't tofu or soy milk is "bad for you", or that eating a Big Mac once a month is equivalent to shooting heroin? I live in the US (as you can see from my Avator), and everytime I watch the news or check AOL I see articles about how pretty much everything you eat is "bad for you, etc." As if the only way to be healthy is to either starve yourself or live off broccoli and soy beans. May be it's because I'm on the thin side (6'1" and 168 lbs) and have never had any real health problems - not to mention that I'm still very young, but it really annoys me.

I eat a mostly healthy diet (lots of vegetables, fruits, low fat milk, whole grains, poultry, etc) and exercise about three times a week. But I still like to indulge in some pizza, a Big Mac or may be something like Elias Brothers roughly once or twice a week. Because I like the food, and it makes me happy. It's as if these "Healthier Than Thou" people are basically people who don't like eating and are trying to take the pleasure out of it.

I don't really get annoyed with it because I guess I agree with them that a lot of people eat way too unhealthily... on the other hand I agree with you that eating junk food every week or two isn't that bad. it's all about moderation and not doing that every day or every second day or whatever.

yeah, i get the impression that in the USA many people go for either "DEEP FRIED SUGAR FROSTED CHEESE" kinda stuff or COMPLETELY 0% FAT-FREE TASTELESS SOY.

It's all about moderation (as noodles said). People that exaggerate and say that you shouldn't eat junk food ever, can go fuck themselves. Really. Junk food is good once in a while.

Bah, it's all crap, regardless where it's coming from. Fat is fat, carbs are carbs, proteins are proteins. Yes, I know there are different types and flavors, but as long as the proportions are right, and you're not getting too much fat or proteins or carbs, it's all ok. The only reason a Big Mac is bad for you is because to get the right amount of protein from one would load you up with excess fat.

Really, it's not hard to be healthy when you know what you're eating and how much of it you should be eating. Simply reading and understanding the nutritional label on food will make someone exponentially more aware of what they're consuming. Even McDonald's comes with nutritional labels now. I, by myself, lost 85 pounds (I'm 6'1" and went from 300 to 215) simply exercising daily (it was 3 hours of water polo practice a day, intense) and rationing and taking into consideration what kind of food I was eating, not how "healthy" it was deemed.

Also, Dr. Atkins and his miracle diet can go to hell. Carbs are good for you.

I've noticed that sometimes people will have one "healthy habit", but then neutralize it with a completely unhealthy habit. For example, when I was in college, there was this girl I knew who would drink Soy Milk and eat Celary almost every day. But then she'd go outside and smoke two or three cigarettes.

I think people need to realize, though, that it isn't just the fat in Big Macs (and other McDonald's meals for that matter) that's bad. It's also the preservatives, the use of white bread, the low-quality meat that's generally used (Grade-D quality, I believe), etc. And let's not forget that most people buy McDonald's burgers with fries and pop (actually, what I sometimes do is just buy the sandwich at the drive-thru, and then go home, make a salad, and drink some low fat milk with my McDonald's sandwich). You're probably better off eating the similar Big Boy Combo at Elias Brothers (which still isn't particularly good for you, but is better than the Big Mac).

you are wrong... carbs is not just carbs and fat is not just fat. There are several types of fat, and the fat in your McDonald meal is unhealthy, while fat from things like fish and certain vegetables/fruit etc are healthy - the oil used to fry your french fries, chichen etc is very bad- trans fat. Furthermore, the carbs in McDonald meals are the fast type, they get used very quickly and thus McDonald will only keep your stomach full for a short period of time so you have to eat more to satisfy your hunger in the long run.

Furthermore.. protein is not just protein either. Protein consist of 20 different amino acids. Some amino acids are better than others or more useful if you like, some are more important to get than others. Glutamine is probably one of the most popular in the world of sport. Depending on the source (meat, fruit etc) you'll get different amino acid compositions.

I eat like that (super-ultra no fat ever) but more because I'm lazy and it's easier to cut up vegetables and eat them raw or open a can of tuna fish and eat it than fry something. Soy can go to hell, though.

Dude, I know the difference between all of them, I know that there's saturated and unsaturated fats (depending on the amount of hydrogens bonded in the carbon-carbon chains), that there are proteins with more amounts of amino acid types, I know that there are different types of carbohydrates with different kinds of glucose chains. I feel that regardless of these differences, you can still handle yourself if you eat and combine the foods correctly. I know all the science behind this crap, and I still feel all the diet fads and organic food trends are baloney.

Untrue. The protein in cow milk is better for building muscle than soy milk. Soy milk protein is only good if you lead a sedentary life style. Cow milk is way better for athletes.

you do, huh? ... well.. you're still wrong... you wrote "as the proportions are right, and you're not getting too much fat or proteins or carbs, it's all ok", meaning it doesn't matter what type of fat, carbs it is - if that was the case you could just eat alot of sugar, some trans fat and protein powder all day long in the right proportions.. and weee... you cheap and healthy?!... the protein is probably less importanted as meat contains a high amount of the important amino acids... and i really don't care if the proportions is perfect myself, but that's just me, i only care about getting my daily 60-100 grams of protein... some days i'm very sloopy with my food though. I'm not a big fan of all those diet fads and there are food trends i don't like either. But i don't mind organic food. I prefer my food without cemicals and shit, but it's not like i buy that much organic food myself. But that's not the reason why some ppl prefer organic food alone.

I read an interesting article about how once you get past a certain age the proteins in milk aren't absorbed by your body any more, so there's no point drinking it. It's all propaganda, maan.
