Post subject: [Mis]conceptions of Atheism, an article I published
PostPosted: Mon Oct 22, 2007 11:36 am
This was published by the Ubyssey (UBC student newspaper) a few weeks ago. Ought to be online, but they're still behind, so I just took a legible picture of the article.

Enjoy, hopefully.

My next article (entitled "Mecha-morals: the ethics of artificial intelligence) will be published on Friday. I may link that as well, if there is an interest.

Enjoyed your article. Your ideas are well thought out, and I like how you were able to write it without throwing punches at Christians and other Theists.

That was very well-written Jaden. :dio:

But holy shit, what is considered the "bible belt" in Canada only has a 66% Christian population? The Christian population in my state is at 82%, with the "non-religious" population hovering around 9%. That may have something to do with the fact that only 17% of Tennesseans have a college degree. The total population of this state is at 5,689,283 rather than 124,000.

It's like being Taake in a giant power metal festival.

Hey, Christians can be college educated too. :) Though you're right in that there are quite a few that actually condemn education. Probably because they're afraid it will weaken their faith (which really makes one question how strong their faith is in the first place, if it's that easily tarnished).

Anyway, where I live (near Detroit), the population is also largely Christian. In fact, my ex-girlfriend was once having lunch at a soul food restaurant with somebody. The two of them began talking about Atheism (she's a Lutheran, btw), and as they began discussing it, almost everybody at the restaurant started staring at them and giving them funny looks.

I wonder when more Christians will realize that learning how non-religious people think is not only necessary, but actually healthy for their faith.

being the atheist that I am your article doesn't really shed any new light on the matter to me - i already knew that theist often have a definition on atheism different from atheists themselves, and that many of them call atheism a religion, which is quite the opposite.
Hopefully theists will get something out of your aticle... though... i don't like the last few lines all that much, because it sounds rather weak.. it's too "plz accept us" and "i don't wan't to fight for what i believe in". Sry, but that is how i interpret that last bit, i know you probably don't mean this. Furthermore, I don't see how being a hotheaded atheist (when confronted by theist who want to preach!?) and so on exclude them from being harmless.
Besides, theist are just as "aggressive" as atheist if not more. So i don't see the point with "apologizing" on behalf of atheism that some atheist act as jehovas witness.. or whatever.

i admit i don't get the "aggresive" part all that well, because i don't know what you (or Vern for that matter) exactly put in the word as such. You can be aggressive in many ways.

I don't think I disagreed with any of this. In fact, I reiterated a lot of these points.

i know.. that is not what i meant. I meant the end should have been more "aggressive" or contain all the elements of your articles if you like.. not just the so-called aggressitivity among atheist and less "come on over here you big white shark.. let me kiss you!!!!"

I'm kind of confused in your part about Naturalism... I thought Atheism meant not believing in any sort of spirits/anything beyond the natural world too? :X

nice article though, GJ

Nope. It's not that all-encompassing. Technically, atheism only claims that God[s] do not exist. But definitely, most atheists are also naturalists (though I've met some exceptions).

Oh, and thanks.

Sort of, upon checking my implant chip. Hopefully things will be back to usual soon, and Trevor will have returned from the nth dimension where this sent him.

Jaden is such a hardcore atheist, that he no longer believes in himself and has ceased to exist.

Jaden was struck down by our mighty Lord for his blasphemy. Praise be upon him.

Unfortunately, I think the only option for them is to create new accounts. Unless there is someway to un-ban someone that I don't know about it, it was just an extremely unfortunate fluke for them. I'm also still not sure what it was about them that casued them to accidently get banned.
