I need help here, guys. I have the opportunity to buy a Randall class A 50 watt valve head and speaker for 1000€. Unfortunately I know nothing about amps. Is this a good deal?

Is the speaker a 2x12 cabinet or a 4x12 cabinet? Guitar tone and overall sound is a very subjective thing. If you like how Randall's sound, have always wanted one, and have the money then you should probably seriously think about buying it. I just looked the head up and new it's going for around $940.00 US. The 2x12 cabs are running between $340.00 to $600.00. 4x12's run from $400.00 to $1,000.00 US.

The condition and age of the gear should definitely be factored into your purchase. Don't get jammed for half broken kicked around old gear. If you have the opportunity go plug your guitar and effects into it and try it out first, then do so. That's the real test. Don't hand over any money until you've had the chance to play through it.

How big is 50W? Because if it's so powerful that you can't turn it up much past volume one (as is the case with my 40W) it's not much use unless you're a gigging musician.

That's interesting. I own a 150 watt Crate Powerblock head and I don't have that trouble at all.

yeah, playing through its the best way to know if its worth the money. Make sure you get a chance to turn it up aswell.

None of this is true. You can buy a very simple volume knob (which works like a Rockman Power Soak) and play at whatever volume you wantno matter how much wattage or speakers it has.

It's a transistor, and apparently the volume should be no issue (meaning it's loud enough anyway).

so why is it that when i turn my tube-amp volume up one mark, and my transistor up about halfway, its the same volume?
