It's quite disturbing, very disturbing indeed. Sex crimes in Malaysia have taken a hike in occurrence these past few years. And to add salt to injury, the victims are often children or teenagers.

A few months ago, the whole of Malaysia stood in a state of shock at the murder of a young girl, Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, who was brutally sexually assaulted by a bunch of psychos. They used vegetables such as brinjals to sexually assault her private parts. And mind you, what followed was sick. She died of a ruptured rectum, and infection from the infected vegetables. Following her death, the culprits stuffed a body into a gym bag and left it by a store in the city. Despite CCTV footages from the store and inquiries on suspects, none have been charged yet. Days turned to weeks, weeks became months. The bastards are still roaming free. Poor Nurin was only 8 years old.

A newspaper clipping on her murder from a local daily.
http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/ ... 56/Article

A few days ago, another poor girl fell victim to a man's bestial lust. Preeshena Varshiny, only 9, was raped, sodomised and thrown out the balcony of her rapist's apartment. Her body was found broken at the ground floor by a security guard.

http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/ ... 56/Article

A few years ago a 5 year old girl was brutally raped, sodomized and left to bleed to death by a 50 year old security guard. Her brother found her in a power generator room, sprawled in her own blood, with very little breathing. She died before the paramedics could be informed. The culprit was apprehended that very day, and that son of a bitch could afford to smile for the press pictures. The courts sentenced him to death, but that doesn't pay much justice for what he did.

That tragedy is a few years old and I can't seem to find any article regarding it. I even forgot what the poor girl's name was.

Reading all this makes me really sick. Sick of the acts done, sick of the fact that these bastards prey on young children, knowing they are far weaker than them. Cases like these are occurring far too often in our peaceful country. Hearing and reading all this makes me feel insecure of having kids in the future. But actually, who is to be put to blame for all this sick tragedies?

1. The Parents

In most cases like the former two, the parents didn't play their part in taking care of their kids. Nurin's parents allowed her to go to the neighbourhood night market all alone that night when she went missing. She's only 8, you fools!! Many parents often take things for granted over here, like letting their kids play out till late, or goin out to the sundry shop on their own. Things like these wouldn't have happened if the parents themselves had accompanied their kids. Negligence, ignorance, stupidity. And by the way, the parents of Nurin are currently being charged for child negligence.

2. Malaysia's stand for banning pornography and prostitution

Being a country that upholds religion as its' main princples, it is considered unhealthy and uncivilised allowing women to sell their bodies. I find that very true and support it to some extent. But seeing all the abomination that is happening, I think it's high time we put aside these ethics for the safety of our generation and the future. Many of these rapists are losers in getting any pussy either from their girlfriends or wives. Soliciting a whore would get you and the bitch in jail. Next option? Grab a girl against her will, do your thing and run. If she's seen your face, kill her. That's what's happening now.

But I think the police have noticed this and they've been very lenient on brothels lately. very few raids in the pass one year or so. But they're getting a lot of stick lately from religious and social groups. Sadly these organizations can't see the forest beyond the tree that is in front of them.

3. Penalties not lenient enough

Here in Malaysia, you're only given the death penalty on two occasions: you killed someone, or you're a drug pusher. So many of the rapists here are only charged to serve life in jail for the next 20 years or so, if the victim is still alive. I agree with giving mischiefs a second chance. But it only goes as far as theft and robbery. Rape is the most heinous of crimes in my opinion, even manslaughter doesn't come close. The death penalty has to be given to these people. Lawmakers and the parliament in the country are working on this at the moment, but they are facing some rubbish from the human-rights society. Death penalty to the human-rights activists in the first place.

Oh, by the way, convicts in our jails have hierarchies of their own. Thieves and robbers are somewhere in the middle, while murderers are conferred 'don' status. Rapists and sex offenders are at the lowest, most paraiah level. They are often sexually assaulted, sodomized and killed in jail, by other convicts. The jail wardens turn a blind eye on these cases most of the time. Serves them right. Many sex offenders survive their jail term, but many of the brutal ones never make it. The public knows of this, and even the press. But we're more than happy to leave it that way.

Are sex crimes really bad in your place? Or is it just in my country as of late. I'm getting a little bit worried here.

It's no much a problem here as it is in most of the world.

Wait wait...

The parents are being charged but the actual rapists are not? When I was a kid I ran outside until it was 11 pm because there was light at night time and went to the shops and markets all the time. Granted, I lived in a small town where everyone knew everyone and things were relatively safe, and everyone let their children out. Letting children go to the night markets in a presumably urban area is a different thing.

it is not a common problem really...it is rather rarely we hear about this on the news. however we got a case running, about a guy called the pocketman...imagine what that is suppose to mean yourselves.. he tricks young kids to put their hands in his pocket were it of course is a hole. imagine the rest.

no murders or something thjough...just assaults, but this is the only thing and has been going on for some years now...they cant track him down.

Back when I was little I used to run around outside 'til late and nobody ever thought of abductions and that happening. Then again I lived in a town where nothing ever happened. Though someone hung themselves with barbed wire once, that was pretty grim.

The culprits are still at large and the authorities are unable to track them. They made a clean sweep this time, left no traces or evidence or what so ever. There definitely would have been some fingerprints left somewhere, either on her body, or the gym bag. And it's a possibility the culprits are not Malaysians. This is because once we Malaysians reach the age of 12, we need to get our Identity Card (IC) done. When applying for the card you need to print both your thumbprints into their database. Many cases have been solved using thumbprint tracking, except for these rare few cases.

Well the incident happened in Petaling Jaya, a major city in Malaysia. It's no small town. The folks should have known better. As for my hometown, it used to be a very nice and peaceful small town. But years have passed and it's booming into a major town, bringing a lot of negativities as well. But so far it's under control, with sex crimes being unheard of. Murders, gang fights, and robberies are the only common ones. And the former two mostly happens involving drunkards. Other than that, little Seremban is still a fine place.

I'm sure shit like that happens over here, but nothing comes to mind recently.

On a semi-related sidenote, I remember this news story back in 2005 that really pissed me off, but for different reasons. In a small city outside of Nashville, they caught this guy who was running this big child porn site from his apartment. There was about a 30 second story of how much he had and what his sentence was going to be, and then when the camera cut back to the newsroom with the anchor he said this:

"It has been reoprted that (whatever the hell his name was) favourite band was Cradle of Filth". They then immediately cut to another story. That pissed me off so much.

we have several pedophiles/murderers in belgian history, the most famous of them being Marc Dutroux and a couple of days ago a Belgian man was arrested for being part of a pedophilia internet website and for selling his two daughters to starr in 'movies'.

People like this make me utterly sick.

Yeah, Marc Dutroux ring a bell here. His story was extensively covered by the Malaysian media. I didn't follow up on it so I don't know what happened to him in the end.

Speaking of pedophiles and child porn, many foreigners (especially Germans) were caught by the cops having possessed child porn and also soliciting sex from boys in Myanmar and Vietnam. Somehow the Interpol got to know of them and launched a manhunt. It's weird how all these people end up in Malaysia, thinking it's safe over here.

It's very disgusting to learn that the Vietnamese and Myanmarese sex industry is overrun with child prostitutes, outnumbering adult female whores.

It's not that Human Rights people are concerned with sex offenders being freed without charge. It's more that, as you said, there's a tendancy for people to want to see them strung up and gutted, and since it appears to be a genuine mental illness... well, lynch mobs solve nothing.

And are you genuinely surprised to learn that there's a huge underage sex business in Thailand? Enough that anyone going there on holiday, from here at least, gets a few funny looks.

As for the main topic, we do have cases like this, as does everywhere, but fairly infrequently. The media blows them up out of proportion, if you want my opinion. Keep an eye on your child and teach it common sense and many of these cases wouldn't happen.

Thomas, it's interesting that as a part of my Law course, we contrasted the attitudes in Norway and England to child murderers (ie, children that kill). There, you help them, here, they're lucky not to get lynched.

Well Thailand is famous for it's sex industry. I say it's the Asian Amsterdam. But in Thailand it's more towards female, shemale, and sex changed whores. It's different from Myanmar and Vietnam, they are the ones with the child prostitutes. The younger the child is, the more expensive it is.

It is very, very rare that children kill here. I don't think i've heard of it at all. But if it happened, it wouldn't suprise me if they got professional help. You can of course discuss back and forth if that is the right thing to do, but jail will not make them better. Especially since you can only get up to 21 years of prison here.

Oh, sure, it's just interesting that you lot are so liberal over there, and that's a compliment.

One more thing... Rape is not the product of lust. It is also a product of a desire to overpower and humiliate someone, to assault someone violently and deprive them of power. If they wanted a bit of sex, they'd go to an illegal brothel. Pornography is not exactly impossible to procure. It may be difficult, but not impossible. Who would say - "screw this, I'm too horny, I'm just going to kill a kid instead of renting a porno or masturbating in private to good ol' brain porno theater." If they're not getting any from their wives, they would first and foremost rape their wives (spousal rape accounts for 10-14% of all rapes in the US btw).

There are several speculations about the real cause for rape in general, but the ones I favour usually talk about the wrong attitudes people have towards sexuality and the sexes, their own and the opposite. They go along the lines of this:

1. Females possess sexuality, they lose something when they have sex

2. Men do not possess sexuality, they gain something, or nothing happens to them when they have sex

3. For their lack of sexuality, men are entitled to some from women

4. Women are perceived as weak, so if they do not provide what men are entitled to, chances are they will be overpowered in an assertion of authority (include stereotype threat in here)

Old notions of the "slut" double standard and the idea that men have to work to get sex (chase) while women only have to approve (give in) factor in this. This is only one explanation, and it applies to stereotypical human beings. Most human beings DO fit the stereotype to some degree though, or else it would not be a stereotype.

It's a long story, but I don't think simple legal and cautionary measures can stop rape. They can make the problem worse, but at the very core of this lie human flaws and human attitudes. Those human attitudes have been around for ages and hurt everyone, men and women alike. I doubt they can be overturned, but they can be improved in a massive explosion of government propaganda, or simple grass-roots action.

You DO have sexuality, that's the thing! The basic attitude about sex I've seen displayed in many places is that sex is an exchange, and in many cases women are the ones giving, and men are the ones taking. I think it's a mutual activity in which both partners participate equally and benefit from. I don't think that men simply sink their pencils into whoever attracts them and says yes.

I mean, there are lots of examples of that attitude. Not too long ago, on a different forum someone was telling a girl that she could just go to the bus stop and open her legs to get sex. Would anyone say that to a heterosexual male? No. I subsequently left that forum because of that crap. Similarly, think of expressions such as "loss of virginity" and the idea that women are worn out by sex. Since that wearing out process doesn't happen to men, women must have something men do not, presumably "sexuality". If women don't share, men can take that stuff by use of brute force.

Anyhoo, this is very complicated and feminist theories of rape are not my forte. In short, equating rape with lust is naive, and I think it's an attitude problem and not a problem that can be solved by means of law or patrol.

Well Sash, I get the point you're trying to prove, and I agree to most of it. However I don't think it's a question of attitude or masculine superiority when it comes to raping children.
