A nice album indeed... More focused than Battle metal but, imho, the best tracks from Battle Metal were slightly better than the best on this album. Still, a good point noticing the filler-free record The Varangian Way is.... I'd give it a 70 to 80 (I only listened to it twice, I still need time to make my mind.).

Incredible album, and a nice progression from Battle Metal. Top ten of 2007 without a doubt. Several listens are required to fully comprehend the glory of this album.

95/100 for me
Long live Turisas!

Listened a few times now. I'm not overly impressed. And now I've just put battle metal on, :dio: its a fuck of a lot better. The new album seems a lot different to me. I mean the drums in, In The Court Of Jarisleif kinda fuck it up badly. They're far to fast, they should be at half time so the song has a groove to it. I get that feeling quite a bit with TVW, seems that quite a few of the 'basics' are a little off, which gives the album a different feel (i'm not saying differing form album to album is a bad thing in general tho). Also i don't think the melodies are as good. They don't stick in your head like those on battle metal do. Also its no where near as catchey (i know some ppl don't really like that but thats one thing i really like in my metal).

Just thought i'd try to explain why i don't think its that good. I'll give it a few more trys, who knows i might end up liking it more then battle metal haha.

Speaking of battle metal...ITS NOT A FUCKING GENRE!!!! lol

I didnt like their first album much (even though I like listening to several Viking Metal groups), but judging from the overall picture im seeing here im definitely going to give it a try.

:dio: :dio:

This is a good album, it has less spectaluar moments than Battle MEtal but on the whole its a more solid album and the songs are much better structured. Micklegard Overture is incredible.

The violin is intergrated much better into the ensemble this time around as well I think. On Battle Metal it often felt like "song + violin" whereas now its more "songolin" if you follow me.

Own it and love it. Varangian Way was the first Turisas music I ever heard, so I have a bit of a bias to it over Battle Metal. Not something I can listen to all the time, but when the mood strikes, nothing else will suit. My teenage brothers are fascinated with the album.

i am yet to give it a really careful listen, but so far i am really liking "A Portage to the Unknown" (awesome chorus) and "In the Court of Jarisleif" (i think the rhythm is just right stu :P).

Well looks like i'm one of the only ppl who didn't like this that much. I don't think its a bad album but if i was to put turisas on, this album doesn't stand a chance against the first one. And rad, i'm not so sure bout your songolin (haha!!) theory. I thought the violin worked perfect on battle metal. Are you talking bout the way it was produced or the actually way the songs were writen?

The songwriting. The viomolin appears for the first time I think on Land of Hope and Glory and then for eveyr song after that it goes like 'song starts....a few bars goes by....oh there's that violin again sitting over the top of the already finished song...'

It works very well on certain songs, such as The Messenger, but it just sort of felt shoehorned in some other ones.
