I started loosing hair about 8 years ago. Slowly, but then the speed increased and I became quite woried. It was a pretty traumatic experience, especially after I shaved my head and discovered I look like shit
About three years I started taking propecia, after I saw it presented in a show on Discovery channel as one of the few working remedies. I can't say the hair has grown back, or not significantly, but the hairloss slowed down and eventually pretty much stoped. So I'm pretty satisfied with it. Here is some info, it may be helpful.

You may use it for 3 months or more before you notice an increase in hair growth and/or prevention of hair loss. If you haven't seen results within 12 months, you probably won't.
98% of men taking Propecia had no side effects. Clinical tests show PROPECIA is very well tolerated. A small number of men (1.8%) experience some sexual side effects. 1.3% reported erectile dysfunction.
No side effects for me though
And I definitely don't look like mister Picard here.
