well...my dad has a ten year old squier guitar which sounds quite good. I'm mainly talking about the new stuff... everything i've tried seems to suck. Epiphone makes much better copies of gibson than squier makes of fender. And better than a Ibanez bass? well that depends. which Ibanez bass' have you tried? which amp do you use? I refuse to believe that a squire bass beats most ibanez. The bassist in my band uses an Ibanez which sounds fantastic.

I've tried the Soundgear SR series, EDB and BTB series. Although they are good, but I still prefer my Squier. For some reason I can't really cut out. Maybe because I feel very comfortable playing it. I do have this problem of getting to used to my own gear that when I play someone else's (especially a different make), I just feel like throwing it down and using my own one.

Well there's another reason why my Squier is relatively good. It's one of the more expensive ones (expensive in relation to how average Squiers are). A standard Squier bass cost between RM 300 to RM 400 here and mine cost me Rm 1200. It's a P Bass Special fitted with a traditional split single-coil P Bass pickup and a J Bass® pickup in the bridge. So basically to me it's an all rounder bass. I don't slap cos a) I don't like it and b) I'm just not good, but my slapper friends are pretty impressed with it. I recommend this bass to any Steve Harris fans out there. Powerchording is awesome and galloping is really fun. You can really get the exact ringing from the strings hitting the pickups, just like Harris's signature. This is the two areas which discouraged me from Ibanez's. I couldn't get a perfectly clear powerchord tone/sound and galloping was just heavy (only). I couldn't get that ringing sound as clearly as the Squier I use.

I get what you mean xxx. In fact most of the Squiers I've tried are pretty shit and inconsistent. I used to hate Squiers and was contemplating on either an SX or Ibanez (with a permitting budget). But all this changed when I met my babe :P . I wouldn't say Squiers are really good but don't lose hope on it. You could get lucky like me.

As for amps, I don't own one. I've been borrowing from my friends and I'm not sure of the models. All I know is that Dilip lent me his Fender, Hantu lent me his Roland and I've been using Marshall's at the jam studios. Sorry I couldn't be specific on the models.

Chill, this whole thread wasn't about dissing brands, just personal experiences and opinions. By the way, what do you play?

By the way, epiphone is not a cheap Gibson knockoff company. No, not at all. Sure the 200 dollar les paul might be, but I've played good epiphones and good gibson's and there is not one bit of difference in them whatsoever in quality. This is why Les Paul authorizes Epiphone and Gibson exculsively to make his patented model. If Epiphone was second rate, Les wouln't allow it.

Epiphone has a long and storied history that has nothing to do with Gibson They were bought by Gibson because they were making equal quality products for less money.

squire? c'mon... Most of the squire stuff you get today is equal to shit. There is always something wring with them.

Well I won't say that all of them are good, but as I mentioned you have to go through the whole rack and there might be one that is actually good. This is the problem with Squiers, they're imitations of Fenders but the quality is far from what Fender offers. BUT(!), the good ones that you get (or can find) are REALLYx2 fucking good. My friend has a Squier and he actually prefers and uses it more than his Jackson Warrior. And my bass, is a Squier as well. Everybody including me, was very surprised with the quality of the sound it produced. I dare say my Squier bass beats most Ibanez's.

A good tip when buying Squier's: Don't go for the 'Made in China' ones. Get the ones that were made in Indonesia. The wood makes a lot of difference. That's probably why mine sounds very good and has a fucking good sustain, especially on powerchords. Freakin heavy!

Its not just the squires, the fenders vary a lot aswell. But your right, try every fender in the shop, you never know it might be the 'cheap' squire thats the best guitar out the lot.

I recently got a fat strat (now put an invader pickup on it :dio: ) that cost me £379, it plays a lot better then my ibanez s1625 which was about £1000. Shows that guitars don't have to be expensive to be good!

+1!!

It all depends on the player to make or break the guitar's quality. If you're a shitty player, the most expensive guitar will still sound shit when you play it. This reminds me of my friend who's a decent guitarist, with a Kelly. The problem is that his picking hand's techniques aren't sharp enough, making everything from the tone to the fluency sound like crap.
