The Day The Country Died - A History of Anarcho-Punk 1980-1984 by Ian Glasper

Not bad so far, written by the bassist for Suicide Watch. He writes for Terrorizer as well...

Making another attempt at The Fellowship of the Ring...I'm giving it more of a chance this time, but while the literature is pretty good, the story remains extremely boring for me. I'm almost halfway through the book and almost nothing has happened. The story thus far has consisted of this:

Hobbits wake up
Hobbits walk through forest
Hobbits eat--oh, how hobbits love to eat!
Hobbits go to sleep

Repeat a few times...

You're not getting the sense of impending dread and loss?

Those scenes with the Black Riders still give me the chills.
"We're alone in the woods...and this creepy dude is just standing at the top of the hill above us." Brrrr....

Yeah what? Are your sure you're reading the right book Heatseeker? Because the part with those creepy dudes are pretty rad. Or maybe you're not there yet. Overall it's an awesome book. And a lotta stuff happens except hobbits taking a shit, just read it to the end.

I started reading Lord of the Rings (again... I've sort of read it twice before) last night :P

Finished Discipline & Punish making me proud of myself.

Beginning to read the His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman (the Golden compass books) and also the Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky.

I'm at the part where they're at Tom Bombadil's house, and pretty much the only significant thing that's happened so far is when they see the Black Rider. I dunno, I'll keep reading...

I think to enjoy LotR you can't worry about how much is happening. Just bask in how well Tolkien describes his incredibly detailed world.

That's the reason I've kept reading this far . Like I said before, the literature is good...the story is just a bit slow going. I'm making it sound worse than it actually is--it's really not bad at all, I just wish the story would pick up a bit. I think I might pick up another book to read simultaneously, though, since I've got a lot of time on my hands. Can't decide what...

You have to take the children's book style with a grain of salt but its worth the read. A lot of ideas in the subtext. I avoided the movie covers and got an abstract cover with a polar bear on it.

The Bombadil chapter and a half are more or less meaningless to the overall story, unfortunately. Among my only real gripes with Lord of the Rings. I love the chapters "Three is Company" and "A Shortcut to Mushrooms" though. Brrrrr.

Richard Matheson - I Am Legend

The book is just so much better than the movie. I saw the movie first and kinda liked it. Now I just think the book was butchered in the quest for a Hollywood 'happy' ending. Booo!

Sounds cool. I'm going to start The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert soon, got it for X-mas.

No real time to read anything by myself at the moment, but for school:

Lives of the Later Caesars (First half of the Historia Augusta)
Suetonius- Lives of the Twelve Caesars (re-read)
Tacitus- The Annals of Imperial Rome (Re-read)
Eusebius- The History of the Church

And then a bunch of books on Greek religion and Hellenistic inscriptions and such.

I love the way they snuck the chaper titles into the movie. All with Gandalf riding down to Hobbit town saying "Oh, a long expected party," and the hobbits saying "Think of it as a shortcut." "A shortcut to what?"

"MUSHROOMS"

I've just started reading The ill-made mute by Cecilia Dart-Thornton and The Urth of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. I haven't read anything else from Dart-Thornton so this is a gamble read, if I find it boring I might stop midways. As for Gene Wolfe, he's one of my favourite authors so I know that I will like this one as I did with the previous 4 books of that series.

Accidental Death Of An Anarchist. It's good, we're doing it in drama and I'm playing the lead.

I've been wanting to read that for a long time... you'll have to tell me how it is.
