wtf, Meshuggah rules.

Nothing sounds like a Metal album that's twisted, corrupted and warped so much that it ends up sounding like a machine dying. It's fucking brilliant.

As for black metal, I still don't get Xasthur, Satanic Warmaster,Eikenskaden (even though i love Mystic Forest), Ildjarn, Mutiilation and Vlad Tepes... It seems i can't really get into most of the raw stuff.

No, in fact the exact opposite was true. Glam was dying on its arse by the dawn of the 90s and what was "in" in terms of rock music was being all edgey and contemptuous of glam and trad metal in general.

Not that I'm saying Pantera jumped a trend, because if they did they would have played grunge, but they definitely got away from the big hair/make-up thing right when it started getting shouted down.

Cowboys From Hell was released in 1990. Nevermind was released in 1991. Bands like Warrant and Slaughter were still popular in 1990. Some suggest Vulgar Display of Power was Pantera's REAL "breakthrough" album. But that album, even though it was released in early-1992, was written and recorded before grunge music took off. So, no. I think the whole "anti-trend" attitude of grunge was still about a year down the road when Pantera took off.

The None EP also kicks ass.

Everything they've done is great, from the tech-Jazz-Thrash of Contradictions to the brutal death of Chaosphere. Excellent band.

Why were the albums never mentioned in their album history then?

Hes got a point there tho, even if those albums are just demos like you say, its very odd not to have them on the discog do you not think?

oh and for the record, i like Pantera. Tho i think they are a bit overated

A lot of band's do not want their fanbase exploited with with insane prices for these records. Do you know how many terrible metal albums have been reissued because the market for them used was so great the band got sick of walking into record stores and seeing hundred dollar+ price tags on their records?

If they don't mention them then there is a certain deniability that if someone ran across this vinyl they would be willing to pay large sums for it when it is not worth it.

Inkubus Sukubus (or however it is spelled) sold pretty large amounts of their back catalog because of mistaken identity in 2001 for example. Some retailers actually sold "incubus" cd's as rare recordings from the pp band to exploit people.

I'm assuming Pantera wanted to keep it more or less ambiguous just so a lot of people didn't shell out gobs of money for dissapointing releases that weren't really represenitive of the Pantera we all know.

On their official website, they also listed Cowboys From Hell as their first album. With absolutely no mention of the four albums preceding it. And I think I told you all about that rumor that Phil beat up some guy just for asking him to sign his copy of Metal Magic.

Yeah, I wouldn't believe that rumor. There is no evidence any of that took place other than "I heard such and such happened."

Believe what you want, but if there is no evidence for a rumor, no matter how widespread, it didn't happen. Most people don't get their asses kicked by famous people and keep it quiet except for a few friends that tell a few other people until it ballons to mythological proportions, doesn't work quite like that.

Secondly, I don't see this happening because of Dime and Vinnie's inherant nature would probably have resulted in Phil getting the ultimate asswhipping of his life if he attacked a fan. Dime probably would have fired his ass for something like that anyway.

Ohh, yeah, there is also the possibility that this website was produced by Atco/Atlantic/Warner/Elektra, et. al and not the band themselves. Often times this is the case.

Pantera may be obligated by contract not to market their old albums because Pantera owns the rights to them, quite a few bands are in this pickle of having to disown their own material because the record label doesn't want the records they spent a lot of money making being passed over in retail stores by fans selecting other records that the label did not produce.

There is also another matter. Look at Vision Divine. They do not hide their first two albums, but they also aren't keeping them in print either because if a fan walks into a records store and happens to buy one of their bad albums it will give them the wrong impression of the band and cheat them out of their fanbase.

I too find Dream Theatre to be overrated- they're obviously technically well done, and they have a few great songs (mainly off the Images and Words album), but in the end, it just feels like soulless wankery- and not in the fun way, like Dragonforce.
