Dream Theater

I would probably agree with you a couple of months ago... Now I've got their entire discography

Can you blame them?

I too find Dream Theatre to be overrated- they're obviously technically well done, and they have a few great songs (mainly off the Images and Words album), but in the end, it just feels like soulless wankery- and not in the fun way, like Dragonforce.

That's an interesting view. I would have described it in complete reverse. DT are technically superior to most in the genre. I find their complexity well written and performed, where as I just see Dragonforce as one long wankering song. I can't get really any distinction from one Dragonforce song to the next. It's all one thousand MPH wankery all the time.

I think the biggest name that comes to my mind is Pantera.

I've never understood the big deal surrounding Pantera or Dimebag Darrell for that matter. No disrespect intended at all. I've just never been able to get into them and I've heard plenty of guitarists that are way better than DB Darrell ever was. So, the mystique surrounding him just baffles me.

Another band that I could never get into was Slayer. I tried and I can't really pinpoint something particular. I've just never liked anything from them.

Pantera, Dragonforce, Metallica (please don't kill me), MACHINE HEAD.

And a big, huge, resounding "meh" for Black Sabbath and Ozzy. I'm sorry, I just never thought any of it was good except for a handful of songs. Slayer, too. Goddamn there are a lot of "great" metal bands that I just hate.

Well, of course, Dimebag's death embellished his status as a guitar player. Much like Cliff Burton's more than 20 years ago. But I think this is what ultimately contributed to Pantera's success:

They were able to take the classic heavy metal of bands like Metallica and give it a slick 90's sound, influenced by the alternative music that was becoming popular at the time. They were able to show that heavy metal could easily fit the style and sound of the 90's, rather than being firmly locked in the 80's. Plus, the whole city roughneck/gangster attitude was becoming popular in the early-90's through gangsta rap. And Pantera brought that whole mentality into heavy metal.

So they were a clear case of "right place at the right time." Even though, technically, they were just ripping off Exhorder's sound.

While I don't dislike it, I do think Bergtatt was superior to it in every single way.

Well Bergtatt is pretty unique. Nattens Madrigal feels to me like an attempt to take standard black metal to its logical conclusion. After that, there was nowhere within black metal for Ulver to go.

I haven't really liked Slayer that much, although I've only got Reign in Blood. But, it just hasn't really stuck with me...not a big fan of Pantera either.

Oh yeah: Dark Tranquility, all In Flames, and every one of their equally spineless offspring bands.
