Oh, and that crappy band "The Duskfall". I mean what a stupid name

There's a reason I don't like Type O like most people do. I say "I listen to goth metal" and everyone always says "oh Type O Negative?" . They're pleasing to listen to, but I can listen to a plentora of goth rock bands that did it all before with a bit less distortion. I don't hate them, I think they are overrated.

I'm a Type O fan myself... But yeah I can see how one would not think they're the greatest, especially considering there ARE more goth metal bands than Type O that not a lot of people who aren't metal inclined don't know about.

I think I have a few more:

Mastodon
Anthrax
Metallica

Metallica is a big one for me. I used to be a fan way back in the day before I really knew a lot about metal, but honestly I just can't listen to them anymore. I don't really know what it is since I do enjoy early big thrash metal bands like Testament and Megadeth but after a few years of being into metal they totally dropped off my radar.

Maybe it was the sound of Lars banging on trash cans for St. Anger that really killed any interest in ever listening to them again too... Dunno. Either way, no Metallica. Ever.

Just doesn't mesh for me, somehow.
It's not any one thing in particular, it just lacks that BM nuance.

To be fair, I haven't heard the new one yet, their last was such a major letdown I have basically shunned them.
I've heard SMRC, Infernal Battles and the split with Mutiilation.
Nothing clicked.

I'd much rather hear some Inquisition.

What do you consider "goth rock"?
I have a fairly respectable collection of old Deathrock, post-punk, batcave, and whatnot.
I never dug TON either.

hmm...

opeth
dream theater
mastodon are -okay-
most of those gothic-ish metal bands with the female vocalists
metallica for the most part
arch enemy
dark tranquility and related bands
sepultura after Arise

Probably many more, that's what I can think of at the moment.

It doesn't really click with me either. With all the hype they get I am hoping they turn out to grow on me and I will "get" it.

For me, I may give them another chance, I may not; luckily, there is no shortage of good music, Black metal, or otherwise, out there.

I think that there is no shortage of bands doing similar things sort of saps my will to listen to the album ten times in a row to find things to like in it.

I usually know right away whether or not I dig something.
Two, three spins, tops.
It is a daunting enough task sorting the wheat from the chaff as it is.

The new one's the win. SMRC was OK, but felt a little too slick for me.

Most albums I am not really fond of the first few times I hear them and i have to give them at least a few listens before the good ones get their teeth into me.

Paysage D'hiver. There is nothing about them that hasn't been done better by any number of bands. Same thing for Xasthur.

I agree about Paysage D'hyver, but I've always been partial to A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors, among others.
Malefic is too prolific for his own good, i f you take what my meaning.
Still, Moon Shrouded in Misery / Suicide in Dark Serenity / Possession of Desolate Magick always hits the spot.

Forgot about A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors, that was pretty good. However, Subliminal Genocide was one of the worst albums I've ever heard. I eventually offloaded it onto Zad.

And Zad STILL hasn't listened to it properly.

Speaking of Type O (I like) can someone please explain to me just what's so damn great about Carnivore?
