I have a couple of ND albums, Inside The Torn Apart and Smear Campaign. How different are they from Scum?

I'm embarrassed to confess that I've never heard this.

A little tip for legally getting some of the songs for free: Go into Amazon.com and download onto your hard drive any "30 second clip" for a song that's under 30 seconds in length. :dio:

Very. Nowhere near as polished as ITTA, for one thing...

...but why?

Great job Zad on a very deserved classic.

As to Thy Serpent's question, their later albums started to incorporate more and more death metal, like you hear with Smear Campaign. Scum is much more raw sounding, as Zad said, and has a much punkier sound to it.

Classic album indeed.

I somewhat disagree. The screaming on Scum sounds very hardcore influenced. But I do also hear some death metal in the way some of the vocals are screamed. I also hear some riffs that could've easily come straight out of Reign In Blood (not death metal, but still metal for those who claim Scum is not a metal album).

You're right that some riffs are thrashy, but it's the thrashier end of punk rather than the punkier end of thrash, as far as I can see. The Death Metal may have been a very slight influence on the second half, but there's not a significant DM influence on Napalm Death until From Enslavement..., and obviously on Harmony Corruption. Both of which deserve classics for themselves, as does Utopia Banished and Fear, Emptiness, Despair in my opinion. Diatribes is the one ND album I haven't heard, it should be arriving in the post any day now... :)

I wasn't commenting on the vocals, and I do agree with you on that point. Dorrian's definitely got a deep hardcore vibe going on. What I was trying to say is that Scum has more of a crossover/punk metal feel, due to the fact that it has more of a pure grind sound. Their later albums still keep this sound to an extent, but added more and more death metal sounds (riffs, pace) to go along with Barney's ferocious vocals.

I was listening to Scum again a few months ago after a long break away from it. It is a classic by all accounts, but the more rougher produced first half makes it kinda feel a bit dated to me now, so not a total classic... (then again, I've had it for about 20 years!!!!!)

95/100 :dio:
