That's what I'm worried about. Technology may single-handedly destroy good old-fashioned skill.

Me too. Can't say I'm too happy about the implications of this.

skill is a means, not an end

although i think musicians should try to get as close to a "live" sound as possible in rockk/metal recordings

Sweet. Now even my lazy ass will be able to shred.

Imagine the amazing live performances.

the live performance thing is just looking at it from a rock/metal perspective though... as a composing tool or just for electronic artists its ridiculously amazing

Who might actually have more tallent and make better music than tattooed, pierced & testosterone-filled kids with strange hair that the only reasons they have for making music are chicks, money and mtv-fame.

Well, so you'd rather fathom the sight of:

The next Van Halen

and the next Sharon den Adel/Christina Scabbia?

its another step in the age of, "you can't play the song? we can just fix it in post" Especially when it will then probably be used for getting, chicks, money, and mtv fame without learning to play hardly at all.

Hhmm good point, I didn't think of that. Well then, it's a double-edged blade. It can both help and ruin the quality of music.

there's plenty of great musicians who don't play instruments (DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin afaik), plenty of shitty musicians who play really well (http://youtube.com/watch?v=6IKV0X3y9gc), and even some who can play really well but still opt for making electronic music (Squarepusher). This is just an (amazing) tool that good musicians will be able to do things with, and shitty musicians will abuse and sound retarded when they use it (they would have sucked anyways so it's no big loss). also the "learn to actually play it" could be levelled against a lot of stuff that is done on almost all recordings today (overdubbing to fix mistakes etc)

also even if it's not used during the actual recording it's incredibly useful for writing music where a musician can get a pretty good approximation of how something will sound before having learned how to play it

Why not actually learn to play music... This is why we should see more live music... it sorts the artists from the cheating nerds.
