Man I really have to disagree. I don't hear any "progression" from The Jester Race/Whoracle. I think it's better than Reroute-Come Clarity, but the thought of the band evolving beyond TJR and Whoracle is absurd. I'd say the melodies are better and the leads are coming a lot stronger than the previous three albums, but it still needs improvement. 69/100 for me.

I can pull a parallel between this album and the new COB. The bands are different in many ways of course, but Blooddrunk got 69 last week, and I felt the same absence of originality on A sence of purpose.
Maybe In flames offered a little bit more, so my grade would be 75. Just couldn't find much to hold on to but a few moments on the album. I'm also the old-school Flames type, but i liked reroute, but unfortunately this piece isn't close to that great album.

I learned to like this, plenty of catchy songs, and there's not much more that you can ask for from In Flames. It's not that different to their old stuff, and although it'd be great if they went proggy and experimental, a long song shows that they're not completely stcuk in the mud. 80 from me.

Chris, I agree whole-heartedly with your opening paragraph and review of this album!

I don't understand all of the haters of In Flames??

Sure I started out listening to In Flames during the Colony/Clayman era too but I love Reroute and Come Clarity just as much. Same goes for this album.

Like most In Flames albums it takes some time to grow but I like this album just as much as the above. It is very guitar driven and I like the way the guitar harmonies and solos are being brought back. Not a bad song like you said but I think they save the best 3 for last.

88/100 for me

Peace....

I think its a fair score (maybe a few % less for me). Its still a really good album but the only problem is that its pretty easy to forget the songs on it since they dont really stand out like their material on some of their better albums (eg. Clayman).
Personally I dont think I would compare this to COB and their dreadful album. This still has elements of their old sound and it has loads of creativity, unlike the latest Bodom album (which was utterly empty).

I've never been able to get the In Flames obsession. I only really started getting into metal around Come Clarity's release, and after hearing it was no good I went back through the entire In Flames discography and didn't get a single thing I liked, and I still can't stand them. I wish I understood what it was that made people respect them so immensely.

I don't know what's worse; the music, or the cover art.

I can't believe it. I didn't see such a dead on review coming. Nice man.

Also I do recommend getting the Japanese special edition or the EP/LP somehow... The extra songs are solid.

My favorite album since R2R for sure.

That's fine if you don't like them but I think it's fairly obvious why they have respect, even if you dislike what they've been doing poste TJR/Whoracle. They helped pioneer a genre.

I don't like them at all, Evil Dead. Even their early albums sounded dull.

I liked Slaughter of the Soul. Heartwork era Carcass and Black Earth-era Arch Enemy were pretty sweet. Not a fan of the genre in general, really. I never really got the point of it when the songwriting is generally (not always) of a much more poppy, verse-chorus-verse-verse-chorus structure than other metal.

Why do people who hate In Flames always name other melodeath staples like we don't know who they are?

As for your helping to kill it comment I've no large argument for that because it's ludicrous. Considering melodeath today is larger than its ever been, and we have great up and coming melodeath bands and groups starting out strong as well as old mainstays I can't say they're killing anything. They're doing what they want musically.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion as well. If you think it sucks that's cool, but I must disagree.

That doesn't mean it's prospering. That means it's the newest trend, right beside metal/hard/deathcore.

I don't think melodeath sucks, I just don't like it. One of those genres that I never gelled with. It's there and I don't mind it, as there it has some good acts. Nahsayn?
