Well, technically today. I'm also reporting on it, and I'm going to try for an interview (I'll ask him when I get my copy of The God Delusion signed).

I'm very excited for this. I'll update this thread after the lecture.

Actually, in response to some of those comments, the fact that so many Christians believe in Evolution and so many Evolutionists are Christians shouldn't be too surprising. Christianity isn't nearly as bitter towards science as a lot of people think it is.

He was supposed to come here but for some reason isn't.

It went well. My friend actually brought his bible to be signed, but Richard refused. :P

He liked my question as well.

I'll update more when I get the pictures.

What happened?
I remember at one time Jaden saying "I KNOW jesus exists, I can feel him with me at all times", or something to that effect...
So: how did this 180 degree turnaround happen?

What an awful book, or at least a bad attempt at a great idea. I loved it when I first read it but then when you actually start studying philosophical atheism, his book appears really dismal. He has great points but all points that are old and already done. He blows off theistic arguments which he could truly obliterate, instead he just laughs them off. He doesn't take religion seriously and he appears as if he is throwing a tantrum. He summarizes a broad spectrum of arguments but doesn't do them enough justice.

Anyways, Dawkins is a great writer and biologist. What he's done to make atheism mainstream is truly amazing. It would be great to see a down-to-earth interview with him.

Jaden also used to say drinking and smoking was for losers.

Then one night he got drunk and laid.

Same way it does for every one else that says they love jebus and are straightedge or whatever. They finally experience it and enjoy it.

Or sometimes they don't... Most cases I've seen of what I like to call " conversion " stick to the sinning once they've had a taste.

I don't feel like typing a bunch, so I'll just link to my report on the event.

As you can see, the issue of vegetarianism became an unecessary hot topic.

Also: I dropped religion in 2005. Honestly, I can't believe people here still think I'm religious. I'm as atheist as they come.

So, did you actually ask him any questions about The Selfish Gene and his other works or did you just concentrate on his worthless failboat of a book that is The God Delusion?

I don't think Dawkins was really aiming for a deep philosophical account on Atheism with TGD, though. He wrote a book that everybody could understand, and particularly since Atheists (at least here in the US) are a generally-despised minority, he was able to make the average joe think a little more critically about both religion and his stance on Atheism.

To be fair, at least the "selfish gene" makes more sense than the "spiritual gene" certain skeptics and atheists have been proposing lately.

I don't understand all the hate on The God Delusion.

While I consider myself more philosophically minded, I respect that Dawkins is not - a point he'll concede. But this debate is one of philosophy AND empiricism. For the latter, I have yet to find anyone superior to Dawkins. If I'm looking for philosophical, ontological arguments, I'll refer to Hume.

The God Delusion was perhaps his most aggressive book, and for it, he recieved responses ranging from best book of the year to quite the contrary. That being said, a lot of the criticisms appear as if they're from people who only read an abstract of the book, or read it too hastily. Cite me a "good criticism" and I could probably tell you where Dawkins considered it in Delusion, or why he is not subject to it.
