This album just bored the hell out of me, simply put.
I gave it 3 listens but i am afraid i can do no more than that.

I like the ballads more than the heavy songs on this album... True the crappy production doesn't help...

50/100

There's a lot of death metal like parts on this album. I think its good for the atmospheric quality.

Yeah, congratulations, but I couldn't disgree more with this review. Here's my main complaints:

Quote:
What I feel is a genuine complaint is that the album is far too content to stay in the realm of doominess throughout its 64-minute running time

Since when being doomy is reason to complain and disqualify an album? Especially when we're talking about a band with a famous appetite for doomy stuff. I could eventually understand such a complaint if Iron Maiden decided to go all doom on us, but not in Road's case.

Quote:
The long songs on Gates Of Fire worked because they shifted and changed, but these just stay in one gear.

What the hell. This is simply untrue. I'm listening to the title track right now, there are slow parts and fast parts and midtempo. Same goes for most other songs. True, the slow crushing doom is predominant thoughout the album, but that's because this was their weapon of choice in order to create the sinister ambiance needed to support the story. And it works.

How can you review a thematic album and not say a word about its subject, especially when it's quite an interesting one (ship of exiled vikings makes it to South America, treason and blood and massacres on the way) and it's treated quite well by the writer.

How can you not mention the soloing on this album, which is most of the time quite impressive.

How can you make no mention of the acoustic songs, which are particularly inspired on this album, especially Tree Of Life, a song that I can only define as pure beauty.

Voyager is a pretty complex album, albeit a bit hard to stomach, and there are a lot of points I feel you didn't touch at all. Don't take this personally, but I really feel you've treated this album quite superficially, at least in your review, if not in your listening sessions.

I'm all for constructive criticism, heheh. Yeh, I should have made the points you mentioned, but I found it really hard to review an album that just doesn't hold my attention in any way, and doesn't stick in my memory after 20+ listens.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, but I'm a little disappointed
seeing as you obviously enjoyed 'Gates Of Fire'!

'Voyager' is far more varied, and the epic songs are much leaner than tracks like 'Fall of Illiam' (an EPIC masterpiece!)...the styles on the epic/doomier tracks are not that different between 'Gates Of Fire' and 'Voyager'. PLUS there are a lot of Road firsts here too...cajun-blues number 'Eye Of Storm', splendid gothic-riffs (Totentanz chorus) etc..
And Sharks voice sounds GREAT here...even if Hell-Roadie would have added something with a greater role (although he does the scream on 'Butchers Of The Sea' at the end....Mark told me in person!).

This surprises!..much of this album was stuck in my head after a single spin....what about the chorus in 'Voyager'? or to 'Tree Of Life'? sweet and liltingly uplifting! 'Frost and Fire' riff intro?

I agree with everything OldSchool has worded here...salient points of the highest order! 'Voyager' is a big fat hairy dry-slap in the face of all EPIC pretenders to the throne!

Man, Totentanz is so awesome! Epic and majestic and melodic, the perfect closure. And how about that main riff, the one that comes after the acoustic intro? I've never heard them do anything like that, and they did it so well. And talking about firsts, Conquest must be mentioned. I don't recall them ever doing such a pummeling song before, brutal thrash borderline death, all growl, no clean vox at all. Actually, Shark's growl is so good I'm thinking maybe he should start a death metal side project or something.

Yeah, I see nothing wrong with his voice either. If anything, he sounds exactly as he should for the role, the way an aging mean viking warrior-sailor would, you wouldn't expect him to sound pretty and operatic.

How come you're talking to the man?

HELL YEAH! No me neither...it's a totally unique song to their repertoire! such a riff! That bit blew my socks off! Glad to hear someone has been giving it as many spins as me!

That would be the business! Shark sounds like a right cranky old tyrant on some parts...yeah...like in 'Serpent King'!

I was in Athens for the 'Up The Hammers' festival and managed to have a talk with the Shark! It was a gigantic honour and he was the nicest bloke! Made lots of time for all the fans there...and he was delighted when I said I thought 'Voyager' was a masterpiece!

If you liked 'Gates Of Fire' or any of the newer ones...do it! It's Manilla Road+vikings man!

imo it gets an 85. the only things it's missing are a good drum sound and powerful vocal melodies

those are the best kind, better than 5 people going "fuck yeah manilla road" and then the thread dying anyways

does the roadie guy do the high pitched falsetto deals? those don't fit with MR's music too well
