Are you saying you respect Nirvana?

What's not to respect about Nirvana?

Not on this site, for fuck's sake. [the review]

I'm all for a classic review of Nirvana's debut album! :dio:

I agree that it's a classic, I just don't see how it's influenced metal.

Does it matter?

Let's just start reviewing everything. Does it really matter what genre it is?

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic there or not :P . I suppose there's some stuff I love that would be too much of a stretch to review even by my standards. A Les Rallizes Denudes review just might be acceptable though. Ear-rapingly loud Japanese noise rock from the 70s.

Of course grunge has influenced Metal! Grunge is the metalcore of the nineties, the new wave of bands that pushed 'normal' metal out of the spotlight. As I said in the review (since most of you probably haven't even read it) Nirvana said that Celtic Frost were a big influence on Bleach, and they tried hard to get Sepultura on the In Utero tour. I forgot to mention it, but Kurt Cobain is the reason that the Melvins nearly made it big with Houdini, he's even on the album!

It's all very well moaning about his whiny voice, smackhead idiocity and ultimate conversation with a shotgun, but how anyone can listen to the modern likes of, say, In Flames and not recognise Nirvana's place in Metal history is beyond me.

I'm going to review some Alice In Chains at some point, that'll convert you, you mentals.

The most metal-esque of all grunge along with Soundgarden.

Grunge besides the aforementioned and Pearl Jam is just really poor rock music. All Grunge did was kill the popularity of pop/mainstream hair metal which bands like Guns n' Roses and Skid Row were already doing with sleaze.

That's true. But grunge also inspired a few worthwhile bands, like Dream Theater.

After doing some thinking, I believe that reviewing non-metal albums is beneficial to us all. At least, those of us who aren't utterly infatuated with a dead genre. If you think about it what Zad (and Misha before him) are/were trying to do, is provide alternatives that some metalheads are bound to enjoy. Not all of us can live off of just metal, 'cause then things get quite old.

Though they may not be metal, they are relevant to metal and your listening experiences. Hence they deserve reviews...

...Well, except nu-metal.

Controversy time: grunge is mostly influenced by Black Sabbath and punk, both of whom have massive relevance to metal. Therefore...

Agreed with Scotto, as well. All I'm really doing is expanding the borders a little.

From the samples I heard this albums seems to sound a little more like The Color & The Shape (their best album IMO).

Everlong is Foo Fighters best song ever and the fact that the video is also awesome makes it even better.

Since when is grunge "massively influenced by black sabbath" though... and most things are influenced by punk but it doesn't mean we're going to review fallout boy here... or does it? :omfg:

Denying that bands such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains or Stone Temple Pilots were influenced by some of the great old ones of the metal scene is just nonsense. And it isn't either a question of either a punk influence is enough to be reviewed here... As Zad said, the best grunge bands were both influenced by hard rock/metal's fathers and punk... In my opinion, that qualifies them for a review here...

Not that I'm not enjoying the debate, guys, but could we not keep this thread solely for praise for the Foos and their wonderful album? I just know there are legions of forumites out there waiting to post delirious expressions of wonder, but are scared off by the heavyweights moving around - like olyphants to hobbits.

My Brother The Cow by Mudhoney kicks ass. I especially like how, unlike most other grunge bands, Mudhoney never took themselves too seriously. Their music wasn't laugh-out-loud hilarious, but it wasn't gloomy/serious either. It had a playfully sarcastic/cynical edge to it. Just how I like my rock music.

And yes, Black Sabbath was a huge influence on a lot of grunge bands. Including Nirvana. Metallica was also a big influence on a lot of them.

I don't get why people lump Soundgarden into the grunge "metal" genre. They really seem more influenced by 70's rock (Led Zep, Aerosmith, etc) than metal.

As for the Foo Fighters, I haven't really listened to them extensively. But I do plan on giving them a fair listen eventually. The fact that they did a song with guitar god Brian May back in 2000 definitely warrants my attention.

Somebody should also review Monster Magnet sometime. They're heavy enough that their music would be reasonably appropriate on a metal site. And Powertrip = Da Bomb!

I've always liked Foo Fighters. I'm not necessarily a fan of theirs but I don't have anything against their music. They've made some good songs, but I haven't heard enough of them to get me interested in buying one of their albums.

Listening to Beelzeboss by Tenacious D (where Grohl sings) makes me think If Foo Fighters decided to go in a more metal direction they'd have the potential to be great metal band.

Not the great old ones in general, but Black Sabbath specifically. AIC it is there but they are not your typical grunge band and as far as I know didn't really consider themselves as such...

Anyway, I am also happy for them to be reviewed here, but Zad saying that BS is the biggest influence on grunge (which "mostly influenced by black sabbath" implies) is propaganda.

I've read all the stories of Kurt listening to Celtic Frost and shit. I've also heard what happens when Grohl tried to do a metal album. Neither made me erect.

Damnit Zad, now I can never take another one of your reviews seriously.

Foo Fighters? Praise? Wonderful? ... What the hell?

Nah I'm just messing. I'll never understand their draw but if you dig it, that's cool. Just wanted to give you a hard time.
