Really? how are you in a position to disagree, BTW.

I spent three years playing and modding this game to death. This is how it breaks down

You attack based on the hit rate constantly. The opponent does the same (but not constant due to poor AI) The only difference is that Diablo works by frame rate based combat rather than turns. two opponents with a base 100% hit rate will attack the same number of times in a single frame. Another difference is that the attack can be interupted though.

i think anybody who knows what a turn-based game is is in a position to disagree. you apparently don't know what one is and probably shouldn't be talking about them.

yeah, and that what makes it NOT turn based. it doesn't stop while you decide what to do with each frame. if you leave the computer the game won't stop once it gets to your turn, it'll keep moving forward.

just because you have a maximum move speed and guns have a maximum firing rate in Counterstrike doesn't mean it's a turn based game.

I bought the Diablo Battle Chest today. I'm playing the original Diablo right now. I can't believe I waited so long to buy it. Even after more than 11 years, it still rocks. It even prompted me to reinstall Starcraft on my computer and start playing the Terran campaign again (love that music in the Terran campaign btw).

Also, to imply that there is a similarity between the fact you know the timing to Diablo 2's animations and a true turn-based combat system is ludicrous. In a turn based game there is an actual mechanism for the turns. In D&D based games they call it Initiative, and your initiative roll every round (or every combat, depending on rules) determines your position in the round, against everyone else's initiative. You can pause mid-battle in a turn-based RPG and interact with your party in a way you can't in other systems.

All Diablo 2 has going for it from your argument is that you know the length and timing of certain animations, and that because you are both clicking in real time but attack in turns, that means it's a turn-based game. That would also mean that WoW is a turn-based game because different weapons have different speeds, but you can learn to time attacks.
