Running Wild, in my opinion, have songs about beer swilling, shagging and having a good time; with the occasional song about pirates flung in (Cos Pirates know all about beer swilling, shagging and having a good time). But, and more important, they didn’t sing like pirates, just about Pirates.

+1 thats one of the reasons why i like Running Wild so much, because in the end theyre just a kick ass speed metal band, while Alestorm on the other hand sound way too much of a gimmick to me.

Let me transport you to the garage of Alestorm's drummer where the band are rehearsing.

*Screen goes all blurry*

*Fade in*

Alestorm member 1: Guys, we've got all these melodies and rhythm parts that sound like Finntroll B-Sides. We have the same mix of singalong melodies and cartoony folk synthesizers, but we really have nothing at all to differentiate ourselves, and the field is already flooded with far better bands.

Alestorm member 2: What we need is some stupid gimmick to make us stand out.

Alestorm member 3: Good idea. Let's theme all our lyrics and costumes around a subject that appeals in an ironic nudge-nudge wink-wink way to drunken students and people who spend too much time on myspace.

Alestorm member 1: Let's see..... ninjas? maybe.... the Chuckle Brothers? the teletubbies? perhaps not. How about Pirates?

Alestorm members 2, 3 and 4: Good idea, Hamish! Pirates it is.

*Blurry screen, fade in to present day*

Narrator: ...and Alestorm's plan worked. All they needed to do was drop words like "wenches" and "ale" into pedestrian melodies, and they managed to get tour after tour supporting bands like Norther. What's more, they managed to get good reviews on reputable sites such as Metalreviews.com, and everyone loved them except for some ass who posted a pisstake on their review thread. They all lived happily ever after. Apart from rio who still doesn't like them.

Har har they dress like pirats now i get it

You're right. With how they're appealing to the Myspace kids and those drunken college students Alestorm will be selling double platinum and doing a special guest performance on American Idol before you know it.

Bastards got us all.

See that's just not true. Yes, the keyboard melodies are 'folky' and yes they are reminiscent of Finntroll, Turisas et al, but to suggest they had all the ideas and then threw in the pirate theme is very uncharitable.

The keyboard melodies have all been written to sound like sea shanties, or more theatrical and orchestral sounds that sound like they belong on the soundtrack to a film set on the open seas.

They are derivate, but saying they are just Finntroll in pirate hats isn't accurate.

I see. Then it looks like I shall have to fight you.

Although it does get annoying when everyone starts talking about just one band for a period... It doesn't have anything to do with the music, but it is a pain in the ass.

Why is it a pain in the ass? Moreover, why would it make someone not listen to a band?

It's annoying to see any type of fad emerge in the metal world which we like to consider beyond trends and fashion. Even though it isn't. :(

What he was saying (looks pretty obvious to me) is that it's annoying that he's heard a bunch of people talking about how good the album is and he's annoyed he hasn't heard it yet/isn't likely to hear it.

showmaser, go to their myspace (myspace.com/alestorm), the best song on the album is the only full track they've posted for listening.
