Well I'm gonna have to jump on the non-metal favourite album bandwagon here.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

But thrash comes in a close second ... ride the lightning is number 2.

And that's a damn fine choice.

It is pretty damn impossible for me to pick my favourite album. (thats why i have been avoiding this thread). But I think my overall favourite album must be Black Sabbath.

A few years back my uncle and myself were driving around on a hot summers day in his jeep. We had Black Sabbath cranked as we were offroading(kinda) and I said to myself that this was awesome. I feel I really get into albums when they are cranked and I am driving. I love listening to music as I drive. Another great album that I love cranking while I drive is Van Halen I. Fuckin awesome.

It is pretty much impossible for me to pick one all time favourite album. But to up the necroness a bit (and accepting the risk of becoming the laughing-stock of the forum) I can safely say that one of the albums that has had the deepest impact on me is Transilvanian Hunger. It is surely one of the candidates for the title of "My All Time Favourite"

Well... without thinking so much...

Rush - 2112 or Accept - Balls to the wall.

Oh yeah, my favourite two albums are Drive Like Jehu - yank Crime and At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command. Both just overflow with urgency and emotion, and I've listened to them so often for so long doing so many things that I don't know what my life would be like without them.

Black Sabbath is also one of my fravorite albums. But if I had to choose only one it would have to be Ulver - Bergatt. (others are Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes
At the Gates - Sloughter of the Soul
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Led Zeppelin IV :D (probbably the album I've listened to most in my whole life)

Really? De-loused is your favourite?

I've heard a lot of people say that and it still doesn't stop surprising me.

I think the Volta have just kept getting better. I think frances the mute and amputechture are both better than de-loused, and equally as good as each other, and that the bedlam in goliath is their best yet.

Seeing them for the 3rd time, 11 days from now!

Well, i'm a little biased coz they're pretty much my favourite band anyway, but they're definitely my favourite LIVE band.

They do not fuck around. No support act, ever. They come out on time, and they usually play a 2.5 - 3 hour set. No encore. All business, but there is PASSION on that stage like nothing you've seen.

I don't know if this what they always do, but I saw them on the frances tour and the amputechture tour, and they fucked with their song structures A LOT. So they'd play a song, but then fade out into weird ambient improvisation for like 10 full minutes and you'd forget what song they're playing, and then the chorus kicks back in and you go "oh yeah, this song!".

I'm not exaggerating, the first time I saw them, they played a 45 minute version of Roulette Dares (they only played 7 songs that night, and the show went for just short of 3 hours!). The important thing to point out is that it's never boring when they start improvising, it really creates mood and atmosphere and when they kick back into the song, you wish the interlude had been on the album.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Jon Theodore as drummer the first time I saw them, and with Thomas Pridgen the second time, and let me tell you that either way, the drum kit is where you look at a volta concert. Absolutely amazing to watch either of those two guys, it's inhuman. I don't know how they have the stamina. If I HAD to pick, I'd see Pridgen is even more exciting to watch than Theodore, and that is really saying something.

Cedric, as i'm sure you know, is all manic energy. Omar just kinda stands there most of the time, but the when the beat kicks back in from a long ambient period, man does he ever rock out!

They also have a guy who plays on stage as part of the band, but he just has a big desk full of knobs and buttons and he continually fucks with the effects of what the band is doing, so they re-create live all the weird effects of their albums.

Alright well, i could go on forever, point is, go see them if you ever get a chance.

Both times I've seen The Mars Volta live Cedric has been too busy jumping around to sing properly and Omar's just not talented enough for me to enjoy their improvising.

I'd love to see them, but they've never come up to my neck of the woods. From footage I've seen, all the wankery looks worth it when the song kick backs in.

So Crusher, one of your all time favourite albums and you can't spell it.

Another one for me:

Megadeath-Rust in Peace
