Start with Khronos, I think it's their best, but this is really near to that level.

I just listened to Nemecic on their myspace page and it was enough to make me order this. It sounds exactly as I'd like my Rotting Christ to sound! I remember I was a quite passionate about them many years ago but then I kinda forgot about them, maybe it was beause I felt that every new release was lacking a bit in passion and power.... I'm not sure about that even  .

Anyway here's a candid story about Rotting Christ and me. I remember it must have been around 1994 (+/1 year). My facial hair had started to become to visible and I realized that I needed to shave for the first time! So one afternoon when I was alone at my house, I got all the equipment and was getting ready to shave when I realized I needed some appropriate musical background for such an occasion. During that time I had just started feeling comfortable with thrash and tasting my first death metal albums. So here was that black metal demo tape collection from a greek metal magazine... hmm ok that should do it I thought! :P So I start shaving (first time takes a looooot of time!) and not paying ANY attention at all to the music until suddenly Rotting Christ's demo of Non Serviam comes up. I felt mesmerized... I managed to get a copy-tape a few months afterwards and I loved that album and still do to this day.
Since then I bought their next 2-3 CDs but then I stopped until today. I hope Theogonia comes out to be as good as I hope and becomes my new Rotting Christ favourite.

Hey all. Usually a lurker but I thought I'd come out of lurking since Rotting Christ are one of my favorite bands. Theogonia is their best album in a long time and nearly rivals the early albums. As for a good place to start, that depends on your preferences.

If you like your black metal old-school, go with Non Serviam. If you like your black metal with gothic tendencies, go with A Dead Poem. An awesome duet with Ribeiro (from Moonspell) is on that album (the song is Among Two Storms). If you like your black metal with industrial tendencies, go with Khronos. If you like choirs and symphonic sounds, go with Sanctus Diavolos.

Theogonia to me is somewhat of a melting pot of the earlier styles. It's definitely a great album. I honestly don't get all the love Khronos gets... there's some good songs (like Lucifer Over London), but it's not my favorite. When I want the band at their best, I go either for Non Serviam or sometimes Triarchy of the Lost Lovers.

But personally, I have to admit Sanctus Diavolos is my favorite and gets the most spins, just because it's so damn catchy and the choirs and symphonic inspirations are so awesome on it. :dio:

start off with sleep of the angels or with Dead Poem which are their classics...Khronos is mostly experimental with many industrial elements which are not typical of the Band. I need to tell you that in Greece this guys are the best thing metal has to offer (maybe with necromantia and septic flesh) but are only known in the extreme metal audience which is sad. They have been unleashing amazing albums one after the other (except sanctus diavolos which i think is a pile of crap) and its good to see that at least people from other countries think they deserve to be known. Keep the black cult alive (quoting Sakis)

Sanctus Diavolos crap? Damn, I always thought that it was one of their stonger release!

another excellent greek band was Nightfall.

well about sanctus diavolos it is just my opinion but i think its their weakest album so far. Nightfall were pretty cool in their early realeases but after a while they completely changed the sound from extreme metal to kinda hard rock-ish (diva futura)

You're not alone. I enjoy pretty much all other RC albums, but SD is just weak. Theogonia rules though, so do A dead poem, Triarchy of the lost lovers, Non Serviam, Khronos, Sleep of the angels, almost all of them. Great discography. They're pretty good live too, I saw them twice and there were great shows.

Athenian echoes is my personal favorite and I also like I Am Jesus.

As for Rotting Christ, I think the main reason I really like Sanctus is the amazing use of benedictine choir and the very dark feeling throughout the whole album. But Theogonia is definately better.

Reading some absurd comments from the past like "Sanctus Diavolos" was weak?!! What madness! This album after a few years is still on my playlist and will always be. Rotting Christ is such a tremendous band. Once in a while I play their discography in its entirety. A wholly magical band.

All their albums in a row? Seriously? :omfg: I can't do that with any band.
