Today i saw footage from Georgia and let me tell you...it was not easy to watch. They were showing footage of soldiers shooting civilians, people screaming and corpses in the arms of loved ones crying their name. It was fucking horrible. War is hell indeed...

Can anyone explain why Russia is in Georgia?

From what I've read, my American ignorance has put together that Russia doesn't like Georgia's independence and how they run their government. Russia then claims Georgia is committing genocide. Critics of Russia say that Russia is only after going for an oil pipeline. Georgia portrays itself as the victim and everyone criticizes Russia. But what is really going on?

"Georgia, a former Soviet state, sent troops into South Ossetia on Thursday, aiming to crack down on the separatists, who want independence or unification with North Ossetia, which is in Russia. Russia responded Friday, sending troops into the Georgian province where it had peacekeepers stationed."

so maybe it's like:
Georgia:South Ossetia
China:Tibet

and/or the two countries are fighting for control of an oil pipeline

South Ossetia is a break away state of Georgia that separated itself from the country during the Georgian civil war in the early 90's. Most of the citizens there are pro-Russian and have been given Rusiian nationality as well. The reason Georgia invaded South Ossetia is due to their new (pro-Western) president's party pledge to re-take the region, which resulted in Russia stepping in to aid its ally.

So yea, it is Georgia's fault basically, but I'm pretty sure that the oil pipeline that runs through it will be of interest to the Russians too. Make your own mind up about it.

I have yet to hear reports on Russian soldiers shooting Georgian kinds for throwing rocks at them. The Israelis, however...

Of course you're not going to hear about it, aside from some out-of-the-way website that professionally trolls Russkie soldiers. Whereas there are plenty of people that like to troll Israeli soldiers... it's not antisemetism, but it is out of proportion.

I was speaking more generally, however, not specifically in this conflict. I'm sure the pictures will come soon enough.

A Romanian friend of mine told me how his grandma hated the brutish Russian occupying soldiers in the 50s and loved the polite, clean Nazi troops from the 40s. The Russians didn't understand what a watch was yet always stole them from people. They use to mug at gunpoint citizens and wear 20 watches on each arm, not knowing what they're used for.

Yeah. Bush will complain half-heartedly about the overreaction of the Russkies, but he's never going to get involved. Interestingly though, I did read something about how Georgian troops were trained by the US.

Seriously. I feel horrible for the Georgian villagers, citizens and soldiers who are getting bombed, but the Georgian government can go fuck itself- getting itself into a fight which it could never win and then hoping that daddy will bail them out.
