Because we don't currently have one of those now.

JFK had an affair with Marilyn Monroe and JFK is beloved. People cheat on their significant others a lot and I don't think it should have anything to do with politics but that's just me.

That's 'cuz Marilyn Monroe whas a hot celebreity and shagging her made JFK 'cool'.

She was basically an older Paris Hilton if I understand correctly, so it does not really make anyone cool.

At least she could act decently. Paris Hilton does nothing.
But the point I was trying to make is that JFK shagged a celebrity, a pop icon, which makes him a hero in the eyes of many.

Actually, Paris Hilton took a pretty funny potshot at McCain last week:

If John Edwards was running for president he wouldn't stand a chance now would he?
Actually, the Democratic Party doesn't choose their official running candidate until August 24 or something. Obama is basically the de facto candidate and Hilary is still trying to sneak in and get nominated. So basically if Edwards was in Obama's situation, the Democrats still would have time to replace him.

But yeah Edwards would be fucked if this came up mid-election.

Please. There are no saints in politics, or anywhere else. Everyone has a skeleton in their closet.

I say, who cares? The guy got laid, on the side, good for him.

I disagree for two reasons:

1. If the president looks bad, so does the rest of the country. The Monica Lewinsky case about ten years ago demonstrated this quite nicely.

2. His questionable private life could be indicative of an ethically questionable presidency.

1: How does it makes the rest of the country look bad? The only thing that has potential to make a country look bad is bad political decisions - often foreign policy. Not everybody cares about politicians' private life.

2: Perhaps, but that's the problem with many american voters. They think a president who can catch an american football, have a perfect happy family, and has the right religous belief - or simply religious enough, makes the best president. Hence all the lame campaign ads and debates about the candidates private life, what bad things they did when they were young, and which jackasses they know or don't know. Makes me wanna puke my guts out! Primitive.

Surely there were at least as many people that admired Clinton for his affairs? There does seem to be a bit of a mythos around the name.

I think the main problem with Clinton is not his marital infidelity (honestly, married to Hillary, I sympathize), but the fact that he probably misused his powerful position to pressure Lewinsky. It's an abuse of power, which is a lot less ethical than a simple affair.

How did he missuse his powers to pressure Lewinsky ? Because I must of missed that one... I mean a BJ is useually something that is given on someones own will... The only thing Clinton is guilty of is trying to keep the affair under wraps.

Picture the scenario: Clinton asks Lewinsky, and he's the president, has the power to ruin your career or to enhance it; if she refused, consequences might have been disastrous for her professional life.
