You can really see the thinking behind banning the words "elderly", "Old Masters", "brainstorm" and "immigrant?" I mean, I can too: Its all this bullshit about trying to not use terms that might possibly in some way offend some idiot while at the same time destroying any possibility for honesty and straightforwardness in language (not to mention historical accuracy... Sorry, England, but its a fact that about 99% of artists in the renaissance were men). Why can't an old person admit that he is old, or an immigrant say that he's an... immigrant? Political correctness is all well and good when you're dealing with actually racist and sexist terms that exist only to be racist and sexist, but how do any of these terms qualify? And why is the west such a victim culture?

Yeah, and where does it end? If a word like 'brainstorm' can be banned, then almost anything could be banned. I really can't see what they're thinking, it's like they're deliberately trying to stir shit up.

Yes, they're clearly scared stiff of losing a lawsuit over it, which could well happen. This is about covering themselves, proving that they tried to weed out the 'offensive' language. I didn't say I agreed with it; heck, read The Human Stain by Philip Roth, great book that touches the subject.

This is where political correctness crosses the line. Brahm is dead on. the ambiguity in these phrases are absurd. These words are inoffensive and maybe immigrants should get over the fact that they immigrated,old people need to realize their old, and etc.

I don't believe in censorship at all, that's what i like about my country, you can say whatever you want. I think it's totally bullshit when series such as south park gets censored with *beeps, nobody has died yet bad language - not to forget how nudity for some reason makes alot of people angry while violence is fully accepted.

Notice that there's absolutely no evidence that these words are banned either. Anyone cited that was actually stopped from using the term "Developing country"? Anyone who has felt pressured to stop describing things as "seminal"? Amazingly enough, no, just some list some schmo wrote that some equally shmo-ey journalist found and thought he could make a story out of.

By the way, I knew the only name cited in there- Frank Furedi- rang a bell... He was the founder of the Revolutionary Communist Party, and so it's quite funny seeing him quoted in something as right-wing as the Daily Telegraph.

You guys should remember that newspapers are products that are targeted very specifically at a market. The market the DT is aiming for is not the type of person that would question things they read, especially if it lets them have a good 2 minute hate on the pc brigade.
