Even though it didn't really have my favorite soundtrack in the series, Final Fantasy X definitely had the best battle theme of any FF game IMO.

Had this been a normal song it would have been my favorite power metal song probably. I even enjoy listening to the midi version.

Cellador's newer stuff has this same vibe to it. Also check out powerglove if you like this.

Somehow I wonder if the people in Dream Theater play a lot of Squaresoft games. I was listening to Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence this morning, and I noticed a lot of its more symphonic/proggy bits sound like they came out of Final Fantasy Tactics. While some parts of Octavarium sound like they came out of Chrono Cross.

The Donkey Kong Country songs always seemed good to me; I base a lot of my keyboard playing on that (indirectly I suppose) because I grew up with it. Gangplank Galleon is pure metal.

Though has anyone heard of Captain Claw (Monolith)? I thought that music had very good orchestration (even for MIDI).

Almost forgot about Jun Senoue... music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Ice Cap, Lava Reef, the boss battles... all great, at least to me). Though the Genesis sounds are kind of annoying.

I also like Gruntilda's Lair theme of Banjo-Kazooie. Very classical feel there. BTW I'm pretty sure Burzum uses some chord progression that the final battle of that game uses haha

Heck almost all video game music is awesome

The SIlent Hill games have awesome soundtracks.

Also, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is a really dumb game, but has an amazing soundtrack. Lots of cool percussion and stuff.
