I agree that most metal doesn't have to be catchy to be good, but there is a lot of good catchy metal out there. Like most power metal, early Children of Bodom, Protest the Hero, etc.

Catchiness = instant gratification and superficiality.

Only retards are not looking.

Seriously it depends.

With the pure noise of grindcore, I can't do anything with it. I need at least a little structure and good riffs. When a song is fast, it need not to be catchy. If a Slayer or Sodom song is fast, we have a winner. BUT when a song is slower, then the catchiness is IMO much more important. Cause Slayer songs are usually not so catchy (at least the newer stuff, I mean, Angel of Death or Altar of Sacrifice is fast and catchy too), I usually don't like their midtempo stuff. This goes for nearly every band. If a ACDC song is slow and has no good melody, then you can forget it.

BUT to come back to DF, they are fast AND catchy. And it's sure no Death Metal, so the catchiness is more important, because it also depends on the genre. BUT, catchiness doesn't damage. All good stuff of Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, COF, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Sodom, Kreator etc. is usually catchy as hell... otherwise it wouldn't be so good.

What? Catchiness is just part of music. I forgot that you're the uber kvlt one that has to be different for the sake of being different.

Sure, if a song is too catchy, then it gets boring very quick. Often an album what is an instant classic from the first listening is getting dull, if you listen too often.

Morbid Angel - God of Emptiness, slow, not catchy.

Also the majority of doom (doom/death) is slow and not catchy.

And Carcass/Napalm death are far from just noise, there is a lot of awesome riffing, which you might find if you stop listening to DF and check out some serious bands.

Seriously dude, just admit you were joking about DF being (I can't believe I'm typing this out) better than Opeth and we'll forget you said anything.

Better is relative. I mean, the artistry value is sure higher from Opeth, but I've tried, but I couldn't enjoy it - compared to DF, which I can enjoy. Ok, it was hard, because I didn't liked the high pitched Power Metal vocals, but after some intensive listening sessions, i could stand the vocals and enjoying the awesome guitar work.

From Carcass I only know Heartwork and it's very good, from Napalm Death I know Fear Emptiness Despair, Inside the Torn Apart, Words from the Exit Wound and Enemy of the Music Business, but I like the more tamed Death Metal style better, than the more chaotic grindcore. But in general, Death Metal is not my style, because I'm not a big fan of constant grunting. ;) What extreme metal concerns, I would prefer more Thrash and Black Metal, because the vocals are more varied.

Re ypu implying that Opeth vocals is not varied?

Have you had any intensive listening sessions with, say, Ghost Reveries?

I have only access to Deliverance and Watershed. And there are sure some good parts like Coil but I would prefer "Into Eternity" or "Dream Theater" if I have to choose progressive metal. Opeth is not so my thing. It's similar with Ayreon. They are too disharmonic for my taste.

Well, your comment was aimed at people who like catchy metal... that happens to be me. Who started getting personal again?
