Disappointing. A couple of good songs and a lot of mediocre ones, not what I expect from a supergroup.

Motion: Bloodbath were always a bit crap, but people like them because of Akerfeldt.

Really? That's exactly what I expect from a supergroup!

I disagree, Nightmares Made Flesh was an awesome album.

This one is indeed a huge step down...
BORING.

Ha, how could I forget poor ol' Petey? Even with him on vox, they're still overrated.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees Bloodbath as overrated. The previous album was great, IMO... but the EP kind of turned me off because of the departure from the Nightmares Made Flesh sound... no more groove, just some all out brutality. Groove is what made Nightmares so cool. And now the full length is here and it just comes off as samey and boring.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing it because it's more brutal and stuff. I'm all for brutality (Hour of Penance and Prostitute Disfigurement released off-the-wall albums this year... the latter finally ditching those mindless gurgling vocals and boosting their music with sick musicianship) but the danger of the style is for an album to blend in and get boring, case in point with The Fathomless Mastery...

Anyway, as James said... unfortunately, that's often what happens with "supergroups". A few exceptions exist but not many.

Now that I've proven to you all that I'm no more than a poseur mallcore kiddie by mentioning Mr Akerfeldt first

Youre still a poseur mallcore kiddie because you forgot to mention the lack of Dan Swano on this album. J/K

Anyways yeah i completly agree with the review, kind of a letdown from the awesome Nightmares Made Flesh but overall a decent album.

Earth Rot is badass; the rest of the album is pretty mediocre.

That song was written by Dan Swanö, he's no longer in the band,
thus no groove and "a bit crap".

:(

The lack of Swano's song-writing makes me fear for listening to this album, but I'll probably give it a go.

Hm, ok you may have a point there.

But I still disagree that they have always been "a bit crap".

Anyway, this new one is definitely not crap, just not that great on first impressions. Not as groovy, memorable etc. Unblessing the Purity has better songs on it IMO. Strange that they released them so close together.

Nightmares made flesh was one of the best death metal releases of all time.

This however is not. I think they've all, including Mikael, held back. Peter is a better vocalist than him but that's hardly why this album borders on mediocre. The recent ep was great. The live album was ok but I guess I kind of felt that they didn't actually care that much on that one. The result is this album.

Yeah, I have to go with the general consensus and say this one really bored me and was definitely a disappointment after the great Nightmares Made Flesh. On the other hand, there's been plenty of good death metal this year, so it's not a big tragedy. Maybe next time.

Too much "groove", no interesting songwriting. That's what I am talking about.
