hey Ben, how would you rate the first album? Likewise Jay, how would you rate this one?

I get shivers everytime I hear the word 'Modern' because of its obvious connection with nu-metal :/

A better album then Sweet Vengeance . I'd gave it 9/10.

Its really hard to compare both albums. Like I said in the review now this is what Nightrage really is since all the promotional hype is gone. When Sweet Vengeance came out it was pretty much hyped as a super group of sorts, now that its a full fledged band the guys have to stand on their music alone and not the guest apperances. While I like Sweet Vengeance better, I must still give credit and points to the band for trying something new with Descent.

A lot of people creamed themselves over their first CD but I never saw what the big deal was... this on the other hand is really solid. It's basically what At The Gates should have sounded like if they didn't stop making music after Slaughter Of The Soul. Fast, aggressive, with bits of melody, and overall catchy music that few bands in the style seem to be able to do these days.

I dont see really why everyone insists that a great album has to be in the nineties. An 82 is a fucking high score for me, a 90 is something that will go down in history as a future classic or at least somethign that will be brought up in heated metal discussions in the future. I really enjoy this album, ALOT and its a great cd but its not a masterpiece.

from that point of view i totally agree but since there are a lot of releases being rated in the 90's thats why i said i would rate this album with 90 and above.Still i guess that the grade is the last thing that is important.the important thing is to enjoy the album and i deffinetly enjoyed this one and i still do. If they keep it like that i believe they will establish them self in the top bands of the scene

I would personally rate this in the mid to high 80's. Not a 90 CD but very close.

I loved the first disc but this was a step in the wrong direction. Too many nu elements especially on track 5. Also, the drumming is a lot weaker. Per Moller Jensen was a much more solid and creative skinsman than the guy they have now. The overall speed is slower and I miss some of the faster songs. I also miss Tom Englund's vocals but since CM requested those be put in at the last minute, I could see why they got left out of this release. Either way, I really like the first disc more.
