Fucking excellent album!, although i dont find the first 3 Fates Warning albums to be progressive at all, they're heavy/power metal IMO, anyways this album is one of my favourite heavy metal albums ever i even like it a bit more than awaken the guardian "The apparition" just fucking rules :dio:

Well this review does not really get across just how awesome this album is. And I don't appreciate the comparison between Arch and Kiske. Kiske is Geoff Tate clone, while Jon Arch has got to be one of the most masterful heavy metal vocalists of all time. WHen it comes to writing vocal lines that are unique and intensley melodic, Jon Arch is probably the best ever. Fates Warning shot themselves in the foot by letting Arch go and getting Alder as he lacks the sheer amount of creativity that Arch brought.

Regarding Spectre Within, The Apparition has to be the greatest song on the album, while I agree that all the songs on this amazing album are wonderful, The Apparition is one of the most glorious heavy metal songs of all time. After the verse proper ends in the song, somewhere towards the middle, Jon Arch's vocals start to talk about golden mirrors, at this point the song becomes so incredibly fantastic that it brings me close to tears every time.

This album and Awaken the Guardian are on my eternal playlist and probably both rank in my top ten heavy metal albums of all time.

Again, while I appreciate the review, it did not nearly do enough to spread the message of how unique and amazing this album is.

Eh. It's alright for what it is, but it'll never beat their Ray Adler-era stuff.

They're both about your age dude.

This is easily my favorite Fates Warning album, and much better than any album with Ray Alder. Then again, I am old, at least by comparison.

I'm young, and this album is amazing. Traveler in Time and Apparition are two of the best metal songs out there, but the whole thing is a masterpiece.

I'm old, and yes, you're wrong.

It's my second fav from Fates Warning, being, of course, Awaken The Guardian, the first one of them I listened, my fav, but both are great masterpieces.

Fates Warning with Ray Alder is very good, but has never reached this level.

This thread has inspired me to listen to the first 3 Fates Warning albums in row and i now realize that i never payed that much attention to Night On Bröcken, maybe it was because its followed by two of the best heavy metal albums ever but damn that album is also awesome, Damntion could easily compete with "The Aparation" and "Exodus" for the best Fates Warning track ever.

For me its like two different bands, i do like No Exit though but it just doesnt compare with the Arch era.

Night on Brocken is an excellent album. The Banshee and the Title track are both amazing songs. THe first album was more Maiden worship than the next two, but it is still damn good.

The only Post-Arch Fates Warning album i have is No Exit and while I think The Ivory Gate of Dreams is an incredible song, everything else falls flat on that album. After No Exit I totally lost track of FW as I didnt care much for the "we're too mature for fantasy" attitude they began to display. Plus Adler is just a Geoff Tate clone ala Michael Kiske. Not very original and his vocal lines are ....peh compared to John Arch's.

And Fates Warning were just Queensryche clones on this and 'Awaken The Guardian'. After they dropped the bullshit, they started to sound like themselves. You 'ancient folk' are gushing over this album because it's just that: an ancient album, which automatically means it's more awesome than everything else. Woooo... go old.

If we put the classic label aside (along with the date of release), it's not all that great.

What the fuck are you babbling about?? They didnt start sounding like Queensryche until Adler joined the band. Do some research before you start spouting off like an asshole. And stop trying to debase the opinions of "old folk" as you call us. I'm 25, hardly old. So go listen to the first three Fates Warning albums, articulate an intelligent argument, and then come back when you know something. Oh and calling someone a dumbass for not liking Metallica qualifies as retarded. Good luck son, I expect it'll take you a while to develop half a brain.

Later day Fates Warning sounds nothing like Queensryche. Not even remotely.

You fail.

Well Jon Arch era Fates Warning sounds less like Queensryche than Adler era Fates Warning. Fates Warning on the second two albums sounds like only Fates Warning can. No other band can sound that way. With Alder however, they began to sound like you're typical power metal type band from America...aka early Queensryche. So now if we take the two proggier epochs of each band...the jon Arch era in fates Warning, and the Mind Crime-Rage for Order era of Queensryche, and compare the two, they share very basic characteristics...that being they're both considered progressive, but if you compare the riffs, the vocals, the lyrics...everything else is different. You fail. You're knowledge of classic metal is found to be lacking.
