Awesome review Daniel. I really liked the Tenth Sublevel of Suicide and will certainly be getting this new one.

There are two mp3s at the following location, one for The Tenth Sub-Level of Suicide, which is the previous release, and one for Tentacles of Whorror; enjoy.

Holy crap this is some grim shit right here. I get this funny feeling like Wrest isn't exactly bursting with sunshine. I picked up The 10th Sub Level of Suicide a few days ago, and wow, fucking evil. I was watching the Super Bowl pregame show and of course it was gay as hell so I turned down the sound on the TV and threw Leviathan in the stereo. It was pretty amusing to see Stevie Wonder playing the piano on TV, but hear Black Metal.

Anyway It took me a few spins to get into it, but for once I thought the gritty production actually fit the music. Wrest sounds far away like he's imprisoned in some cold black dimension somewhere. There was lots of nice changes in pace to keep it interesting, and overall the album has a very surreal nightmarish appeal to it. In a very bizzare way this music reminds me of that old Heavy Metal cartoon from the 80s. I'm not sure why. I plan on getting Tentacles of Whorror as soon as I can.

One point of contention however, the home made arm guards with the nails sticking out all over the place HAVE GOT TO GO. Seriously, when one of these black metal freaks actually puts two dozen nails THROUGH their arms, then I'll be impressed. Otherwise, it just makes you look like some henchmen from a B-fantasy movie made in the 70s.

i like the first half of the cd, very fast and aggresive, then the next half kind of bores me, its very slow and mellow. Maybe it will grow on me

It didn't take long to grow on me, perhaps a couple of seconds :)

This is a complex work of black art, wonderful atmosphere and a sense of artistic placement rarely seen.

Yep, this was quite an enjoyable album. Some of the slower/softer stuff took some getting used to but is also quite good.

I have to be in the right mood for this one, but given that I am, it's incredible.

Just ordered my copy today! I always pull out "Tenth Sub-Level of Suicide" whenever I am particularly full of self loathing and misanthropy. However, it is the only album I have ever had, where I needed to turn down the treble and up the bass. Otherwise Wrest's screaching will cause my ear drums to hemmorage. It's a great piece of depressive music, but I don't think it is something I will still be listening to down the road. This new one sounds very promising however, the speaker exploding production seems to be amended somewhat.

Leviathan is fucking awesome. I always get shivers when I listen to them. They're very fucking grim.

It's only one guy. One insanely pissed off guy. Anyone else notice the rebuke in the back of the lyrics booklet for 10th sub level? (Or am I the only one who actually owns a copy?)

Nah, I'll get around to buying it. It is on the must buy list, I don't remember it being particularly easier to find a copy of it. I do have a copy of Tentacles though.

heh yea I about fell over dead myself when I saw it sitting in the CD store. There's a good store where I live that tends to have some more obscure bands. The only place that has bongs, hip-hop, skateboards, and black metal all rolled into one lovely slice.

Finally got my copy in. Definately a step forward from Sub-Level. I think I am facinated with Leviathan not so much for what it is, but for what I hope it might become. I can't help but wish Wrest really pushes even further on the next one. God forbid the production becomes more clear, but I think it would enhance the atmospheric parts quite a bit. Usually, fuzzy buzzsaw prodution drives me clear up the fucking wall, but for some reason i put up with it. If there is one feeling emmiting from these albums I would have to say it is complete and utter despair. Which is perfect for listening to at work. Did anyone else notice the sampling in Track 9 about six minutes in there is a clip from Alien Resurection where the guy says "Earth, what a shit hole."
