You're asking for photographic proof of the Holocaust, or of Fridge being a greedy Swiss, or of Cara saying that millions of people dying is boring?

I prefer Cara's pictures than the other options, by the way.

You'd rather look at Cara than at piles of corpses?

Well now.

To be honest, I'm going to go against you folks and say that holocaust denial should be illegal. Normally I'm against enforcing any historical interpretation as law, but the holocaust is awful enough that I think it merits it. More importantly, since 99.8% holocaust denial is tied to serious racism, I think it's important to nip that shit in the bud and give deniers as little room as possible to discuss their views. Especially because for 99.8% of their minds would never be changed by things like "evidence" and arguments.

Trouble is, if you make denying that illegal why not make denying all genocides illegal? Case in point:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holodomor

The minimum estimate for dead there is 6 to 7 million, caused by Soviet food policies. Up until the eighties and even since, Russians have denied that this happened. If denying the Holocaust isn't allowed on anti-racist grounds, the same should apply here and to the Armenian genocides, and to Britain's actions in Africa, India, and Ireland, and so on, and so forth.

This thread should've been about the Armenian genocide/not genocide. It would've been an all out boxing match between Zad and Kath. Come one, come all, two men enter, one man leaves!!

It could have been interesting, but I'm bored to death of being accused of something some ultranationalists did a hundred years ago so I try to avoid these issues.

And we all know who leaves the ring when you fight with a Turk. Oh yeah I said it, bitch. *shoots himself in the foot*

Denial of freedom of speech and the ability to share ones view in spit of lack of historical evidence to back it up.
I would like to think of your statement as 'unamerican' as it can get, even if a person's views are 'extreme' at least grant them the ability to speak them.

He's from Canada. He has no sense of what it means to be "American" as if that's a positive thing. I hate Americans, not the citizens but the people who advertise that they are American whilst still in America.

Least Americans don't deny the genocide that we've committed. Native reservations piss me off to no end. It makes me fucking sick to think how we treat Native Americans. Almost makes me want to skip the academia route for the humanitarian route.

I appreciate the complexities of the issue, but I do kind of believe that more countries should be forced to deal with the fact that they've done some fucked up shit. This will never happen though, and you guys are probably right.

This I'm still against though. If you want to go against the historical record, fine, but the fact that 99.5% of the time holocaust denial is tied to extreme racism, I think there is an incentive to place some restriction on free speech. But, as you guys have pointed out, this sort of thing is impossible to put in place; I'm definitely not reccomending that we imprison every person who denies the holocaust. Ach, I'm not expressing myself clearly. Enough to say, I guess, that action should be taken against public figures and leaders who deny the holocaust and genocides, where possible. For example, a politician recently ran at the provincial level here in Quebec who denied the Rwandan genocide; personally, I think he should have been barred from running.

And hey, if thinking that people shouldn't be able to say racist and idiotic things makes me un-American, so be it. As Trapt pointed out, I'm Canadian.

Fact 1: A ban on negationism is a ban on free speech.

Fact 2: That ban prohibits or at least impedes the historic research of the Holocaust, possibly out of fear of a milder judgement of the Third Reich's debt. For instance, a historian and professor of the University of Ghent, prof. Gie Van De Berghe, was nearly ousted from his position as docent on account of having discovered new, and less drastic data concerning the death camps.

Fact 3: Nazism has killed six million, various forms of Marxism have killed one hundred and fifty million. Wearing a swastika is a definite faux pas, wearing a Ché t-shirt is considered cool.

Let's be reasonable.

And wearing a Che t-shirt that was mass-produced and sold for $25 in a mall is an indication of being a fucking moron. :D

I think the main difference is that the Nazi ideology has violence towards an ethnicity as a core value, whereas under communist form it's more of a side effect.

Then what business do you have berating the foundations of my countries government? You implied making holocaust denial 'illegal' but go back and say that your not recommending every Nazi sympathizer/anyone who even hints the holocaust never occured in jail. You are either a hypocrite or do not what your talking about, if someone denies that a genocide occured regardless of any level of government he has his opinion and if he cares to endeavor to engage in a debate about the subject the 6 million estimate of the burden of proof is on him to negate.

Most deniers see that number as two million with a lot of homos, gypsies and political prisoners thrown in.

Blaming Marxism for deaths is like blaming John Locke for the genocide of Native Americans.

+1... blame Stalin or Mao, basically.

Also you can say thanks to Marx for all european social welfare. Marxism is the base for both communist and socialdemocracy.

Of course, it's a complete coincidence that Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao and the likes share the same ideological basis

Saying they were Communist -> they killed people -> therefore Communism kills people is hardly a great argument. You can read Nietzsche without turning into a genocidal madman, yet hey! Hitler read Nietzsche!

Ultimately, influences on madmen always get criticised without reason - Marilyn Manson and school shootings, say.
