I finally got around to give this one a spin a while ago and I must say, I enjoy it much more than the band's past works. I do still like some power metal but Arthemis always was a bit too "Italian" for my tastes.
I'm not big on the Italian power metal sound, honestly. I didn't like the production of the older albums, either. It always sounded thin to me. Back From the Heat was decent but this one is a whole other story. It's infinitely better to me. It's much darker and heavier and the production's much clearer and punchier too. Of course it's still Power Quest's vocalist so no problems in that department. He's high but clear and not nut-pinching like a lot of Italian vocalists. Great album.
Italian? I don't hear any Italian in their musical style whatsover. They blend in with most European Power Metal sounding bands. Nothing ethnically identifiable if you ask me.
You don't? I'm not talking about Black Society because that one definitely sounds different (and is much better) but their early works (The Damned Ship, namely) sounds like a slew of other bands on Underground Symphony.
I also have "Back From The Heat" and "Golden Dawn". Personally, I love "Back From The Heat" and feel that is their best so far. But even on those albums I still don't find anything that makes them sound Italian. However, I have not heard the album you are referring to so maybe that is why.
Well to be honest, it's been ages since I actually heard the thing (read: 4-5 years ago) so I might be wrong myself. Maybe I got a bad sounding copy or something (I check out a lot of stuff with mp3s) but I remember that album (The Damned Ship) in particular sounding very thin and rather bland and generic like many bands on Underground Symphony that so happen to be Italian.
I do like some Italian stuff so I don't mean to sound arrogant but I just mean the mediocre stuff like Projecto, Frozen Tears, Highlord, Skylark and others. Though some of them have become surprisingly good so I guess I might have to check out some other Arthemis albums now...
