It's a long interview, but in it Gene Simmons explains how he was the one who invented the devil horns. One of these days, I hope someone sets the record straight and the answer ends up being Dio

I thought it was an old Italian thing? Dio's grandma use to do it to keep evil demons away or some shit. Then he started using it on stage.

Well, in that Headbanger movie docu thing Dio states that he took it from his gran, the 'evil eye' and popularised it. Gene is full of shit, why would legions of metalheads raise their hands at every gig as if to say "YEAH MAN!I HOLD MY IMAGINARY PICK LIKE GENE!!!MOTHERFUUUCKKKKIIIING METAAAAL!" Whereas the evil eye shit is cool.
