So far I don't find this album as memorable as Hardworlder or Avatism. That's not to say it's bad, but like someone said earlier, I don't hear enough hooks that really grab me. It's also quite short, not to say it should have been 60 minutes long but with just 8 tracks, I have to question how musically inspired the band was when writing this album. I wil need to listen to a few more times. It could very well be a grower.

I hope it is... It grabbed me pretty quick, I must say, and I have spun it to death since I got it, and as I said, this tops Hardworlder for me by an inch. Still not better than Down Among the Deadmen

Great review Thomas, i have only heard half the album once but i had to stop it because honestly the songs were so great that i'd rather listen to it when i buy it, from what i heard this sounded more like Atavism than Hardworlder thats ok because i love both albums.

I see Down among the dead men is the crowds favourite, it was my favourite too but i've been listen to Traveller a lot on the past few months and its funny because it was my least favourite but now im not sure but im loving that album.

Hmmmm I don't know, it's a solid album but I miss that melancholic and bluesy feel Hardworlder had in places. I would have liked another one in that style. But there are still some spectacular songs here, like the title song, Ape Outro or Nasty Hero. So it's good to have Slough Feg back and it's definitely a major event for me, regardless of their popularity or sales or whatever.

After giving this one another spin I can say it's not as good as Atavism but, imho, slightly superior to Hardwolder.

85/100 for me when Atavism got a 90 and Hardworlder a 78.

I am with Jeff and Lucifer's Son on this one. I prefer Atavism and even Hardworlder (slightly) to this one. Some songs, Overborne and WHite Cousin come to mind, did really nothing for me. So, saying that "every" song sticks out on this album, I could not go that far. There are actually a few that ARE filler, the feeling I did not get on Atavism, my favorite. And as the time went by, I think I may have quoted Traveller a bit too low, but I was just getting started writing for the site at the time.

The title song is, indeed, spectacular, but one 10 min masterpiece is not enough for a good Slough Feg album.

I agree about the filler part, Overborne is definitely average and it's also very badly inserted in playlist, in second position, where you should have a song of impact. I'd say Shakedown at the six is the other filler. I disagree about White Cousin though. I was indiferent to it too, the first couple of times, but then it began to make more sense and I now think it's a very good song. The rest of the songs kick ass.

after listening to this a few more times, i think they were more interested in writing awesome instrumentals rather than vocal-centered stuff. most of the vocal parts are really short, like they just threw them in as a starting point and then as soon as possible they're like "alright now here comes the fun stuff" and break out into minutes of awesome riffing. not sure if that's a good or bad thing. i love listening to it right now but i guess it might get old and it doesn't have as their other albums

That was my initial reaction after realizing it had none of the vocal hooks like Atavism or Hardworlder to a lesser extent.

Simian Manifesto is awesome! That one has taken up residence in my crawlspace and won't leave.

The Hunchback is made worse by being the first song on the album. If it was last I might love it as Slough Feg going all doom-y and stepping out of line. As first, though, I hate it and want to skip it to get to the monkey madness.

What the hell are the lyrics of White Cousin about? My gf made an interesting observation that maybe the theme of the album isn't Planet of the Apes but actually the idea that people are becoming more primitive and animal like and monkey-esque behavior is on the rise. Then I played her Simian Manifesto and she agreed that it might just be a celebration of primates. I love her for that observation.

I thought "White Cousin" fit in with the celebration of primates, and it's like a monkey singing to a human.

It reminds me of Planet of the Apes II with the nuclear cult underground worshipping a missile and being albino.

I like how the riff form Hunchback of Notre Doom gets played at the end of Ape Outro. Stuff like that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Is it just me or it does seem like they recycle lyrics from other albums?
