Exactly. Manson is for posers, his schtick is tiresome, all that almost Satanist image he has is just so the MTV 'rockers' can feel hardcore while listening to his albums. Probably how Frigid get spinning this between Nickleback and (Jesus fucking Christ) Mudvayne.

Alice Cooper and King Diamond (the next logical step) are way, way superior.

Generally those that toss out words like "poser" are actually the posers. When someone looks at the music someone listens to and determines their "cool" status based on it, they're a fucking poser, a trend-following turd.

Just sayin'...

Yeah, of course, that's it. People who don't listen to Slipknot, Mudvayne. Korn, Manson, etc are the real posers. Asshat.

And in the eyes of those people, "true" metalheads are the posers, because they all have the torn jeans and the band shirt and the long hair and the 'hur hur we're tough attitude'. And before you say I'm generalising, think what you are doing about the fans of Slipknot, Manson, etc. It all just goes in a circle.

Not really, since the former actually like metal, while the latter like commercial bullshit. Here poser isn't an opinion, it's a fact, if you had a friend and you told him: "I just heard Alters of Madness, holy shit it's awesome," and he replies: " All Hope is Gone pisses all over Morbid Angel's discography" then that person is a poser, pure and simple. I'm not going into stuff like OMFG Dimmu suck because they're not tr00 BM.

Of course you do, I know tons of people who'd rather listen to Korn or Slipknot than Opeth.

But I don't know if that's Poser-y as much as misguided and pitiable. Fine, you may enjoy 80s Madonna more than King Crimson, that's up to you, 80s Madonna has its charms, but musically speaking King Crimson are miles ahead. Same here. Poser-y would be if they pretended to like King Crimson or Morbid or whoever but secretly preferred Madonna/Slipknot etc.

People who don't listen to them because it makes them "posers" are fucking lame.

No, it's not but it's actually quite true... Poseurs are those who don't listen to popular music because it's popular and stick to obscure formations just to look smarter than the others...

I'll buy that definition.
Good tunes are good tunes, regardless of labels.

That being said, I never much dug MM; hype over substance never did it for me.
I'll take (Ziggy / Alladin Sane era) Bowie, Alice, or King any day of the week, thank you.

Wrong, that doesn't make them a poser, it means they have a legitimate opinion on the subject. Hell, I found All Hope Is Gone better than the most recent Morbid Angel album, and thats my opinion, it doesn't make me a poser.

Seriously, get off your fucking high horse and stop judging others from something as subjective as music taste.

I listen to all three bands, and listen to them all nearly equally the same amount.

It's got a couple good songs, but for the most part, it's very not good.

Eh, it's grown on me a little. Still far too many interludes and not enough songs. The songs themselves ain't bad; pity about the production.

Zad, what did you think about my comment a few pages back about the difference between listening tastes and wanting to promote an aesthetic view of yourself as different bases for judgement?

No, I mean Heretic is awful. There's like two good songs and the rest of them are boring filler; the guitars sound like Styrofoam oars with strings attached and the vocals are lame too.

Erm... I suppose. The fact remains that the, eg, Slipknot maggots are indeed big fans of the band, and I judge them for having such silly tastes as much as I do them for wearing silly hats or whatever. I see what you're getting at; I like Cradle Of Filth but don't want to wear a t-shirt of theirs with 'cunt' on it because it would project an image of me that I'm not comfortable with. I'm still a fairly big fan, and would present myself as such to someone who asked - doubtless then I would be judged the same as if I'd gone up in eyeliner and a JESUS IS A CUNT t-shirt, depending on who the judger is, of course.

It's the purposeful promotion of a silly aesthetic or "look" that merits ridicule, IMO, not simply music tastes.

In an ideal world, sure. As it is, someone coming up to me and saying what huge fans of The Jonas Brothers they are will be on the receiving end of more heavy sarcasm than someone who likes Isis, or Godspeed You! Black Emperor or whatever the musical opposite of The Jonas Brothers is. You'd be the same in that situation, I can't think of anyone on this site who wouldn't. Heck, even Seinfeld would shake his head in sorrow.

I should have added "...beyond rational doubt, naturally" to my post. There's a huge difference between Slipknot and the Jonas Brothers. Eurgh.

Surely the easiest way to identify a poser is somebody who wears an Iron Maiden t-shirt and only knows Run to the Hills. Or someone who says they love death metal such as early Trivium.
