Ok, who here has dreamed of one being as awesome as Shane MacGowan (without loosing the teeth, preferably)? The man is an idol to poets, drunkards and musicians everywhere. And the Pogues are probably the best musical act to ever come out of Ireland. EVER. Not even the Wolfe Tones come close. Sinead O'Connor? Pffft.

Rum, Sodomy & the Lash is THE classic.
Red Roses For Me is pretty good too and If I Should Fall From Grace With God falls pretty close. The rest has good songs but is uneven.

Rum, Sodomy & The Lash, most definately. Still need to hear a couple of those, though.

RS&TL has a great succession of kickass songs, and the attitude really comes through. But IISFFGWG has Fairytale of New York, and fuck me, that's a good song.

Btw I voted Rum, Sodomy & The Lash.

And what about the Corrs???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5Z_AJa9ZWs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IHvmypz ... re=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5gZt9dsEbg

Slightly tenuous link but the above makes me lol.

Anyway, I saw Shane MacGowan at a festival once, and couldn't understand a word he was saying because he was so pissed. I like the Pogue's music but I don't own any albums so can't vote in your poll.

The Corrs are good, but still, can't hold a candle to the Pogues.

And that sounds like classic MacGowan

The Corrs are to celtic folk what Bon Jovi is to metal: a MTV dérivé that sucks as much as it's possible to suck.

If that's a joke I don't get it.

Anyway, that song they did with the Chieftains was also bloody annoying. Damn the Corrs for ruining my Chieftains purchase.

Well, they are pretty hot... You'll notice the member playing the most important instrument composition-wise is the guy :P

I can't believe you guys actually think I like the Corrs...

FS said the Pogues were the best Irish band, which I agree with, but it reminded me of a very funny (IMO) sketch on a mid-90s British TV show about The Corrs.

Now, as I don't really have much to add to the Pogues discussion, I leave you in peace free from irony or sarcasm

Pfff, you suck at humour. I'll watch the sketch, though.

I wasn't aware that I was attempting humour, rather directing you towards other peoples'

The best thing about The Corrs is that bit from The Office, which I assume Rio is speaking of.

Enough talk about celtic women! Talk about the Pogues!

Does anyone know what type of percussion instruments they use? Is it just two simple skins, or is there a more complex kit?

But is it like a whole drum kit? I never hear any cymbals, for example.
