My bro was playing Oblivion and I was hearing the intro riff, and it's fucking awesome, definitely going to hear this.

I do like Mastodon quite a bit. I was gonna buy it at my local record store because it was on sale for $9.99, but it was all sold out, and when I finally had the money to buy it, the sale ended, so I just said "fuck it" and ordered it online.

After watching this video, it seems like Brann Dailor is their best singer. >.>

Yeah, that Late Show performance was pretty awful. They were much much better when I saw them touring for Blood Mountain, vocals and all.

Heh, when I caught them on the Blood Mountain tour Brent sounded bloody awful. I may have mentioned that in my review, actually.

This is interesting:

Not saying I agree, but he might have had a point re the 'metal/prog for people who don't like metal/prog' if he'd have said it about Blood Mountain.

I've just never been able to get into this band. I've heard all the CDs and I just don't get what is so awesome about them.

.:c:.

nothing that anyone writes on SA is meant to be taken seriously

my favorite part of the old Your Band Sucks columns was people who wrote in disagreeing.

I've never understood why people say this like it's a bad thing. Gosh darn those bands with widespread appeal!

(I have a bigger problem with people assuming I love Metallica/Black Sabbath/Maiden/Judas Priest when I say I like metal, then they're baffled when I say I hardly ever listen to those bands. I don't like talking about music with people.)

Ironically, by the rules of his own article, it would have been better if it had been written by someone who actually hated Mastodon. D:

Just got this a couple days ago, and there is something decidedly different about their sound...I can't put my finger on it. And it's not just that they're mellowing out a bit, it's just a different feel or aesthetic or something. I dunno, maybe it's the classic rock tinge that they say they tried to include. Whatev, so far looks to be their best album yet...album of the year for me, most likely.

I've never been much of a Mastodon fan but this album has kept my attention for the past few weeks. I find it to have a great deal of musical diversity. It just sounds more dynamic than they're previous stuff. If that makes any sense at all?

Same here. Their whole sound is different here. There's almost none of the Sludge feel that was all over Remission and Leviathan, probably the only part that even just harkens to that sound is Scott Kelly's guest appearance on the title track, and even then it's not really that Sludgy.

I really dig this album a lot, album of the year at the moment, but I just hope they don't completely abandon the Sludge sound.

I'm a big fan of their two previous albums. But for whatever reason I haven't been able to get into this album yet.

It could end up like Tool's Lateralus and take me a long time for it all to sink in before I realize its brilliance, or it might just not be as good. We'll see.

I'm having the same problem. I've only listened to it two times or so since I bought it the other day. I like what I'm hearing, but it hasn't resonated with me like Blood Mountain did after a couple listens.

After multiple listens, I was wrong in my original statement. Crack the Skye is better than Blood Mountain. I am in love with the title track, they actually put Scott Kelly on a song that sounds meant for him this time. Awesome album, well done James!

I just got this yesterday. It's a hell of a step up from Blood Mountai in my opinion, couldn't get into that one at all.

This is a super late entry, but I thought that I would give my opinion cause it's so different than everyone else's. I cannot stand the Ozzy style of vocals and it ruins the album for me. Not to mention the dreamy psychedelia feel. It's like a Pink Floyd meets Ozzy meets some cool riffs mixed in. Ugh! Not every song is like this, but enough to make me disinterested in listening. I don't like Ozzy and I don't like Pink Floyd. I really liked Leviathan. It had so much power. The Ozzy vox are too much for me. We already have one Ozzy. Let the other guy sing he has more power and a way more original voice.

Notes the In Flames signed shirt in your avatar.

Proceeds to laugh...hysterically.
