I don't think any single bands can invent a genre, it's usually more of a gradual trend or progression. Sabbath probably recorded the first full album/song that could be considered "heavy metal" though.

If any band can make that claim, it is Sabbath.

That's why I voted yes. Sabbath just took what was there and got something new out of it. In a way, that's invention, no?

Steppenwolf coined the phrase "heavy metal thunder", though...
it was a build up, beginning in the mid-late 60s, certainly, but Sabbath took it to a place hitherto untrod.

Of course they did. They're Black Sabbath. BLACK SABBATH.

I agree with this but voted yes anyway, for the reasons pointed out in your second paragraph.

Really, it's a progression; before Black Sabbath were Led Zep, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, Deep Purple, Helter Skelter (The beatles, yes, one the first real metal songs) and a lot more... But a catalyst was needed, and Black Sabbath was this catalyst. So yes, they invented Metal as a milestone in a logical musical evolution process.

+1

Though I think what we call Heavy Metal today is the brainchild of Judas Priest.

Yes. Like the clever people have been saying, it's not down to just one band, but a few bands setting the stone rolling. Heck, you could just as easily give Led Zeppelin the honour, and I'm sure an argument could be made for Chuck Berry. Priest and Sabbath are the main reasons Metal is like it is, and all the other bands add flavour to the subgenres (I'm contractually obliged to mention Rush here).

Sabbath brought it to the mainstream. They sure as hell weren't the first to play the style.

Beethoven was a hardcore motherfucker. They say he shook his fist at the stormy sky the moment before he died. That's pretty badass.

When an aristocratic elderly woman got down on her knees and cried while begging him to play, Beethoven laughed at her and answered, "Composers do not cry! Composers are made of fire!"

Beethoven is my all-time favourite classical musician/composer, maybe even all-time favourite musical figure.
