The thing about PTH is that they're making music that, for me, embodies the spirit of the classic 80's stuff but is totally new and represents this generation of metal. They're fast as fuck, they kick ass, and they can play.

So my two picks would be PTH and Mastodon. They're making the best new metal, in my opinion. Saying something like Candlemass is, no offense, kinda ridiculous when you look at the question. Neurosis and Deathspell Omega are good choices as well.

Agreed. Their new one does kick ass, but imo they made their best music over 20 years ago and they're still doing roughly the same thing now.

Why? Their new one is better than the 95% of albums out there... Best doesn't mean innovative, and Doom is not an innovative genre, but if we speak about actual quality ("best"), Candlemass is there.

I looked at the question. It says who's making the best metal today, not who's making the best new metal today.

You could easily answer Heaven & Hell for this question.

But they're much younger bands, without half the history that H&H have. Looked at in that context, you could say H&H are making the best Metal... will Slough Feg be as good at that age?

Yes & no... yes, Slough Feg or Hammers of Misfortune make way better metal than H&H, but H&H is no crap. Is a good effort, a good album, but not a masterpiece.

I don't understand; "Even though their new album isn't anything all that great, Heaven & Hell are making the best metal today because they pioneered the genre?"

Well, I liked their new album, it's great. And we'll see how well Slough Feg do in thirty years' time.

Please don't put Slough Feg in to that category, they have been around for 19 years now and have released 7 classic albums, what more do you want from them?

Don't bother Voice, it seems Zad's trying to replace Ken in the "silly-judgements-posture"...

It's fantastic that Heaven & Hell have released a great album after being in the business this long, and that you can't recognise this shows a considerable lack of judgement yourself.

All that it shows is that my opinion differs from yours.
H&H's album isn't bad, not that good either and saying they make the best metal today is just silly.

Recognising a decent effort of an album and saying it's the best metal made today are two different things.

But that's exactly what you guys are doing with Slough Feg, Mastodon, Protest The Hero, etc etc.

That goes for any band. "Best" is a strictly subjective term when applied to music.

I've only heard ape uprising once and i must admit that i thought it was excellent, but do you really think its better than Traveller or Down Among The Dead Men?
