That's funny, because I'd say that Shadows Fall is metalcore.

Why, because of the vocals? That's not enough for a metalcore tag in my view. I hate the term 'modern thrash', but its a far more apt descriptor for Shadows Fall than metalcore.
The vocals, the melodic soli, the thrash riffs...it's IMO in the same league as Trivium and Bullet for my Valentine. Maybe a little bit better.

I think BFMV is way better than this particular Hatesphere album. At least the songs have something you can remember about them.

Modern thrash metal is easy to explain: Just listen to the current Soulfly, The Haunted (!), Cavalera Conspiracy, last Machine Head or older Sepultura. And even Exodus have no clean vocals nor haven't had in the past. Or listen to Testaments the Gathering where Chuck Billy growled like hell.

I've found dozens of reviews and everyone declared Hatesphere as Thrash Metal. Some said Thrash Death but none - except this here - dared to say it isn't thrash at all. And I think it would be the same as if I'd say that Metallicas Master of Puppets was Power Metal and rate it 49/100 because it doesn't sound like Slayer and it's too melodic for thrash. Know what I mean?

Erm, Exodus had clean vocals on their last. Although I agree that Modern Thrash does exist now, it's various bands either ripping off The Haunted's debut or adding a good amount of groove into the mix.

Ok so every modern thrash band has a checklist, "Hmm let's see we'll ripoff that shitty half-thrash act from Sweden hmm what was their name oh the Haunted! Or basically the other end of the spectrum is saying according to Goat lets ripoff Vulgar display of Power as much as possible. Way to go Goat!!!, someone obviously hasn't heard Witchaven.

That was clearly not what I was saying. Admit that most of the modern clones have clearly been listening to The Haunted! And yes, there are exceptions to the rule, way to go.

So I checked Witchaven, and they're not Modern Thrash, they are a Thrash band that was formed in 2006 and have Black Metal influence. Seriously, way to miss the point, Einstein.

what do you mean they aren't Modern thrash?, Ooh you mean the whole groove influenced thing well in that case they are gods to bands like Five finger death punch and the like. Why is that label only used for bands with groove influenced its a HUGE misnomer considering there are bands that play "MODERN" thrash without the groove influence at all. So why can't they use that "MODERN thrash" label for any of the newer bands that don't have any groove in them whatsoever?
Wtf mang!

Modern Thrash as a genre means the Haunted rip-offs. Of course, you can have modern bands that play Thrash, no-one's arguing that. The newer, 'proper' Thrash bands are Thrash Metal, simple as.

I think this whole "Modern" thing may have gone a bit too far. What is the point of calling something modern? When did this term start being used? If you're talking about a mixture of different styles, why not give it a new name instead of just saying modern this or modern that?

no, the actual guitar chugging itself. Listen to the verse riffs for Enlightened by the Cold, Act of Constriction, Stillness, Ghost of Past Failures, Power Against I Against I, and Eternity Within. Also In Effigy. Its the same thrash metal riff concept as any old school thrash metal. dundundundundundundun. Modern Thrash evolved out of NWOAHM. It could have elements of metalcore, melodeth, and groove. I consider The Formation of Damnation to be a modern thrash album as well as Death Magnetic. Trivium is trying too hard to sound like anyone. Bullet For My Valentine isn't all the way there yet in order to be called modern thrash. They got the riffs in some songs. Other songs don't have that style. They have alot of emo and metalcore elements still that keeps "Scream, Aim, and Fire, from being a modern thrash album. Shadows Fall has thrash riffs in almost of their songs.

And so have Hatesphere...

...but what Shadows Fall also have is the mix of clean vocals and harsh hardcore vocals, which is one of the main aspects of metalcore.

You guys are a bunch of bitches.

PS. Hatesphere has sucked for a few albums now. It's a shame.

maybe. They sound more like In Flames on crack mixed with God Forbid. The vocals singing over the melodeth reminds me of Scar Symmetry. This is nothing like Shadows Fall. More melodeath mixed with hardcore than modern thrash. There has to be a good balance. The hardcore and melodeath can't overpower the thrash.
The problem is is that there are no hooks. Its just straight through pummeling. Slipknot has a couple of modern thrash songs on All Hope is Gone. The first song is a good example.

They are. Even wikipedia says it ;)

In the late 1990s, a third wave of metalcore groups appeared, who placed significantly greater emphasis on melody. Such bands as Bullet for My Valentine, As I Lay Dying, Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Haste the Day, Trivium, Darkest Hour, Poison the Well, Parkway Drive, Underoath[33] and Atreyu[34] are the most commercially successful practitioners of metalcore.[35] These groups took major influence, cues, and writing styles from melodic death metal bands, particularly In Flames and At the Gates.[33][34] Melodic metalcore frequently makes use of clean vocals,[36][37][38] and is significantly less dissonant than other metalcore. Some of these groups, such as Shadows Fall, have voiced an affection for '80s glam metal.[39] Melodic metalcore groups have been described as "embrac[ing] '80s metal clichés", such as "inordinate amounts of smoke machines, rippin' solos, [and] three bass drums".[35]

yeah but none of those bands sound anything like Shadows Fall. They have more in common with each other.

I don't really think Shadows Fall deserves the blanket metalcore label, but what can you do.
