it really isnt even hard man, people try to act like there is some kind of technique and they think its cool the lower they can go and fuck up their diaphragm. They are idiots just try it and use water and salt on your vocal chords after a show.

Enjoy your trashed and swollen vocal chords.

its not a normal sound or vocalization by the body so of course its going to sound stupid. Why do you think they layer vocals and amplify them in the studio

hah. they are going to end up that way either way dude, that punishment to your chords is non-sustainable. Your better off just screaming and using whatever methods you can of repairing them somewhat while you can.

Growling, when done correctly, shouldn't hurt at all. If done correctly, it doesn't damage your vocal chords at all. If you wanna believe that there isn't a way to do that in a way that doesn't damage your voice at all, then feel free to fuck up your vocal chords as much as you want, but you'll still have your head up your ass.

What do you mean "done properly"? There are a million ways to do it but sooner or later it takes its toll. You can't honestly tell me exhales and constant tightening of the diaphragm for those lows doesn't result in some sort of fucking up of your chords if you believe that you can somehow not avoid a swollen trachea and sore throat then your an idiot. There are ways to mitigate some of the wear and tear like warm ups, liquids, and some practice but I seriously most people could go without some form of damage.

Any sort of singing at all requires massive support from your diaphragm. Any sort of singing, not just growling. Yes, if done properly, a lot of growling shouldn't do any more damage than a lot of singing.

I wish I could believe that I mean when I sang in my old band I would go by all the tips that the older guys from Meathook and other death metal bands told me and I would still come out from practice feeling like I had fire in my throat and my abs burning. But if you find someway of making it less painful by all means pursue it.

Yeah, if it felt like that, then you were doing it wrong. I can't really give any tips you probably haven't heard before, but singing with my school's chorus has really helped me understand how to use the voice effectively.

haha I know d00d they are exceptions well, but I mean things can go dreadfully wrong I mean look at Lord Worm that man was one of the best vocalists and the music and that amazing range he had took its toll on him. Listen to Once was Not and None so Vile and try and tell me there is no difference in quality

The difference in Once Was Not was, from what I've heard, a misguided attempt to not alienate the fans that Cryptopsy gained in the DiSalvo era.

This video's from 2006, and Lord Worm still sounds like a vicious animal.

I wouldn't say it's dumb, Noodles. Cheesy, yeah. Like you're living in a sci-fi/horror movie.

Thanks for the advice, Steve. Yeah, I don't really enjoy the deep guttural growls actually. I prefer just the husky ones, where I can hear the words being pronounced. Something like Chuck Schuldiner or David Vincent on Altars.

I was just saying that's why I, and maybe hellraiser too, don't growl along to extreme metal.
