One word review of Hiromi's Sonicbloom: fuck.

Why do jazz musicians even bother making studio recordings? It's almost always like a castrated version of how the song sounds live >.>

Because they want to document what they do, I guess.

There are a lot of jazz albums that don't sound castrated. But then, a lot of those artists I haven't seen live so how could I tell...

I mean like recording-wise... why not just record themselves playing live? Hiromi basically played all the songs from Beyond Standard, but I'd much rather listen to a live recording of the set I saw last night than the studio album. And from what I've heard (which is very little) live albums are way better than studio albums when it comes to jazz.

The applause and audience noise bothers me on live albums. I prefer live DVDs anyway, where I can actually see what's going on, so the audience noise doesn't bother me so much.

Well, jazz musicians do record "live", just not in front of an audience. i.e. they play things together and spontaneously rather than each recording their own parts. There are some incredibly intense jazz studio recordings. But yeah, it should really be seen live for the right effect.

I never really started appreciating Jazz until I learned a bit about playing it anyways. Same with Classical music.

Maybe I just like longer solos and improvising which is usually what happens live.

Have any of you guys seen Al Di Meola live? I'm seeing him Tuesday. :D

I know! 3 awesome shows in 11 days. I'm afraid after this I won't be able to see a decent one for like 2 years :[

Al Di Meola kinda sucked. He basically soloed a bunch and I started to get bored and wondered if it would be funny to cheer at an inappropriate time, then we left at the intermission.

Kinda weird there is no Painkiller stuff... Diamonds and Rust live will be cool. And now I know what to make a playlist of for the drive.

So Judas Priest was fucking amazing. Didn't love the setlist beyond British Steel but it worked. I never realized how flamboyant Halford really is. His leaning over wasn't as bad as I expected either. Whitesnake was pretty awesome too when they were playing their hit tracks. The opening band wasn't worth the time. I simply texted my woman the whole time they played.
