A hard album to listen to, but every bit as disgusting as you could wish for. It's funny how many people have copied this, considering how bizarre it actually is.

EDIT: Btw, good hole-filling, Goat. Didn't realise there were such big Carcass-shaped holes.

Honestly, anything pre-Heartwork I can't get into. It's just a jumbled mess of nonsense... I've tried numerous times to listen to this and I think it's called Symphonies of Sickness, but they both sound awful and I can't find any redeeming value to either.

I was surprised too, not even Necroticism! Ah well, I'll get to them eventually, any you fancy?

Evil D, you should really listen to Necroticism, far from a jumbled mess of nonsense indeed. SoS is pretty great, or so I think, bringing structure and (well, sort of) technicality to Grind in 1989. 1989!

Reek of Putrefaction kind of is a jumbled mess of nonsense, but it has a lot of shock value, and it appeals in that anarchic, extreme "Scum" kind of way. I agree with the score here and the review.

Symphonies of Sickness is way better; it's still jumbled and anarchic but it has this really putrefied, vomit-inducing atmosphere. Which I guess is the point with Carcass.

Yeah, maybe. SoS I guess deserves a classic, in its own sick way.

SoS and Necro are both classic material, I think. What do you think of Swansong?

As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure I've listened to Swansong... can't remember how it goes if I have, and I can't find it lying around

Yeah, I'm not taking anything away from the album, I just don't get it, and stay away from it. lol. I think Carcass kick ass, especially Swansong and Heartwork. I'll have to check out Necroticism, I believe I've heard it, but it's definitely been years.

Haha, amazing how many people haven't. It's like a stripped-down version of Heartwork, really. Not as bad as people say, but not that awesome either.

Edit: @ Evil Dead - Dude, you'll know it right away. Corporal Jigsore Quandary! :dio:

Wow I guess I really am the dissenter here. I love this album as I do most goregrind. Even the original's production doesn't bother me at all.

And I definitely seem to be the only one who doesnt really like Heartwork. Three killer tracks (Heartwork, This Mortal Coil, Doctrinal Expletives), and a bunch of filler. Necroticism is in my eyes Carcass' best album, no doubt.

Well, as I hope came over in the review, I do like this album, but it's definitely not my favourite Carcass - that varies between the middle three depending on mood! Strange you only like a few songs on Heartwork, an album that seems pretty much perfect here and less... monotonous isn't the right word, but it's definitely more fun to listen to than Necroticism or SoS. Great to hear from someone who can take old-school productions, though, a lot of what people complain about in that regard just seems nonsense to me!

Listening to Heartwork again, I forgot just how fuckin awesome it is. For some stupid reason that was the only album I bothered to check out by these guys. I think I will make this a Carcass week and run through their entire discography starting with Reek of Putrefaction :dio:

Listening to Swansong now and I must admit it rocks. Which is the problem, it has more in common with a hard rock or classic heavy metal album than it does with grind or death metal. I wouldn't really call it a stripped down version of Heartwork either because it's quite a bit different. Its so weird listening to older Carcass works and then putting on Swansong because it sounds like a totally different band, but its still pretty damn good.

Definitely agree. I've listened to this on occasion for the past 2 years or so, and it's still hard to digest. I love it though, if only for the sheer ugliness and repulsive extremity of it.
