Hm, I like their technical stuff but I also like songs like I walk beside you or you not me, because, they are sure not fast, not brutal, not technical, not progressive, but the melodies are great.

I can't believe you didn't like Just Let Me Breathe, Thomas, it's a kickass song.

Just Let Me Breathe is a total low point in DT's career.

So I bought this album... I was in HMV and they had a big sale rack with this, Scenes from a Memory, Awake, Images and Words, and that one filled with covers that Zad reviewed recently, for like £1-2 each. I thought I should take advantage... But I was like- I'm not going to spend £4 on Dream Theater so I'm only going to get one. I already have Images and Words which I think has 3-4 good tracks on and a lot of ear-scraping garbage.

So I was desperately trying to channel Zad and metal_xxx for guidance on which ones to get, and it seems like I made precisely the wrong decision. Ho hum if I go into town today I might get Metropolis.

Not their best but this is a good album in its own right.
Poppy and commercial as far as Dream Theater goes, but still damn good.
I don't think you made a mistake, but yeah, Metropolis is their 2nd best imo.
(after Images & Words)

Very good album. Unfortunately, absolutely not what you want or expect after hearing awake and the COS single.

Record Company politics at it's worst. Good thing DT are actually capable of songwriting that is simple enough and melodic enough so that the record actually got released. This could have easily turned into them getting dropped.

The band actually broke up briefly because of this album.

But DT on the other hand can't say they didn't try to promote the album, because they did. "Burning My Soul" made the radio waves at the time in my market, therefor WEA/EastWest most defnitely had their indie promoters spending money getting them airplay.

I lived in the Washington DC area when this was released and I do remember 'Burning My Soul' being played on a station in Baltimore and I believe they also played a shorter hacked version of 'New Millenium'. I seem to be one of the few people that really enjoys listening to this album. In fact, this was the first concert that my wife and I saw together.
