Love this album. However, I rarely give it a spin anymore. I overlook it despite knowing how awesome it is. Need to fix that.

I can't believe I haven't listened to this, I'll fix that tomorrow, and then I'll will let you know my first impression. In your review you said this album is a milestone in the Black Metal genre, so, why is this not a classic, like Stefan said?

Btw, the cover art is incredibly awful (in a bad way :D )

When I said landmark I did mean for True Norwegian Black Metal as opposed to 'normal' Black Metal. The album does have its flaws... I wouldn't say it was influential enough to merit classic status, myself, 89 isn't that far off and considering the rate at which classic reviews get cranked out I don't see the problem with calling it an archive instead of a classic (again, especially since I wouldn't call it a big 'c' Classic). Glad y'all diggity it, though.

It's more classic than some albums reviewed lately. Doesn't mean I have a problem with it being "only" an archive, I just thought it deserved a more special treatment at MR.

No doubt a classic because it helped form the rock punky black metal side of things, not to mention it kicks ass on its own.

Black Metal has always had as much (if not more) in common with Punk as with Metal. Likewise, Thrash.

Personally, I don't understand this. I only listened to a couple songs but it's like black metal without all the things that make black metal good--atmosphere, brutal melody, evil-ness (it's a word, I swear). In my opinion, that is. But still...that atmospheric break in "The Swordsman" is almost laughably abrupt and just seems totally out of place. Nothing else I heard even struck me as anything other than totally boring black metal of the most crude kind.

But probably, I just don't get it.
