I would've also mentioned the album's rather unusual production, where the drums are mixed higher than probably any other instrument.

Lombardo is the best musician in Slayer, he thus deserved to be heard louder than the others.

I don't know; it has good writing / playing, but something's missing. It sounds too sterile, or something.

Blame it on Rick Rubin. The man's considered a production wizard or something but he isn't worth licking the floor on which George Martin or Bob Ezrin have stepped.

Bob Ezrin producing a Slayer album would be awesome. :D

I don't think its that, this album just benefits from the loud drums, they crank the atmosphere up. You are right about Lombardo being the best musician though.

This is my favourite Slayer album. Good songwriting to go along with the good riffs- they take their time, they don't rush through songs, they develop their ideas. I will never be a fan of King's solos, but otherwise, a great album.

What solos? Seriously, his "style" was fun when he did it with the Beastie Boys but Slayer could do better.

King is a terrible songwriter, and has penned Slayer into immaturity with his "WWE Bad-ass" style of lyricism. Clear, noticeable differences between GHUA/CI-written King tracks and GHUA/CI songs by Araya/Jeff.

Expect more of the same for "World Painted Blood."

Ah yes.

Just like the last classic, one for the "'bout fucking time" folder.

When SOH is a classic and RIB not - then there is something terribly wrong, because RIB is THE Slayer album and one of the best thrash metal records ever.

SOH is a little disappointment for me, because, they changed the style too much and some songs are just not that exciting.

Yes, that's a perfect score, it's just not in the actual classic section. I think the system's changed since then, but it was before my time so I'm not entirely sure... Adam?

If you look through the archives, you will find plenty of examples of this. Truth be told, it is in the classics section, it just doesn't have the score to match. That was reviewed far before my time as well. Perhaps we didn't use to list scores for these albums as CLASSICS? We'll have some internal discussion and see if we can do something.

/agree

Some of the better riffs in metal on this album right here. Actually blew some speakers listening to the first part of Behind the Crooked Cross too many times at max volume (back when I was a young lad unconcerned about hearing damage).

Mid-paced metal was always for me what Slayer did best, starting with Die By The Sword.

I agree with this, even Hell Awaits is fairly mid-paced compared to RIB, or at least less frantic; the pace of RIB is what ruined it for me.

RiB is for me the ultimate Slayer album. Whereas Hell Awaits is my second favourite. But Reign in Blood has everything what I expect from Slayer: 30 Minutes high speed power with some great breaks. :D This album kills them all with sheer velocity - and it's still catchy with good melodies.

South of Heaven is just sometimes too slow and the vocals are a little bit weak.

Just FYI, I went through the classics section and did a few updates. Reign in Blood, and many other deserving albums, are now listed as CLASSIC instead of having scores. Anybody see ones I missed, let me know.

That should make them happy for ten minutes or so. It's like back in the old days, when parents used to dose the kids with gin to keep them quiet in the afternoon.

I like the way the review team look down on everyone as unruly children.

Hey, don't lump us all in with sober grumpy Zad!

You have to admit though, at times you guys deserve it (this thread not being one of them).
