First come, first served. Besides, didn't he say in the AC/DC review that it wasn't a classic?

Both are, actually, but it is up to the reviewer.

Mandylion is Gathering's finest moment and deserves a classic status imho. AC/DC classics are Highway to Hell and Back in Black, the rest is the same recycled riffs over and over and over and over again.

You're saying than AC/DC recicled in an 77 album (and in older ones) riffs from 79 and 80 albums?
Mandylion is a classic, but Let There Be Rock is a classic too.

ACDC are one of history's most overrated bands. They've been writing the same 3-chord song over and over again for over 30 years.

Back in Black deserves Classic status for influence and recognizability alone, but the rest of their catalogue can suck it.

Harsh words, I know, but albums like this, which are unique and definitive, far outshine mediocrity (even if that mediocrity is produced by a band generally accepted as classic)

First, AC/DC & mediocrity are only together since mid 80's. Their 70's material is high quality and very far from mediocrity.

Second, the Bon Scott material is far more influential and classic than Back in Black, that is another hell of an album. If only one AC/DC should be considered classic, Highway to Hell is the one. And the one we speak about, Let there be rock, it's the second one.

About Mandylion, yeah, it's a classic, and a great album, inferior in my opinion to the next two,the mighty Nighttime Birds & How to Measure a Planet?.

Listen to the Bon Scott era of AC/DC. That's the good stuff, not the shitty Brian Johnson era who are merely a Bon Scott tribute band.

If You Want Blood You Got It is one of the most kickass live albums, ever.
All Bon Scott era material is great.
Overrated?
No.

I HAVE listened to both Bon Scott era ACDC and Brian Johnson era ACDC. I know its hard to believe, but just because I have an opinion that disagrees with the masses doesn't mean I'm being ignorant of something.

The quality of the songs in the 70s is slightly better than after Bon Scott's death. My problem with them is that there is very little variation. You can mix and match the songs and it won't feel like anything is out of place on any album. To me, that shows a lack of any kind of progression. I like Highway to Hell, but not enough to listen to--what--5 albums of it?

At least Back in Black flows well as an album.Hell's Bells or the title track or Shoot to Thrill would be out of place on any other ACDC album. That, and the fact that its the first album I, and many others, think of when we hear ACDC makes it a classic--even if the songs aren't as good as Highway to Hell or TNT.

But anyway. This thread is for Mandylion, so if you wish to discuss this further, let's move it over to the Let There Be Rock thread.

Mandylion = awesome, as is Nighttime Birds
