Franklyn - Endearingly odd romantic/action/fantasy/thriller that leaves you totally in the dark as to wtf is going on for a good hour before tying all the plot points together - sort of. Will either make you want to watch it again, or laugh derisively and wonder how actors as good as Bernard Hill and Eva Green got involved (Ryan Philippe is in it too, he can act! Quel surprise). I'm somewhere inbetween. ***

Edit - reading a bit more about it online it's impressively ambitious - the director also did Control, the Ian Curtis biopic.

Holy fuck.

A really cool movie would be just two people playing the game.

I could have seen Stanley Kubrick make a movie like that.

Or, it could narrate the life story of a man shaped like a little yellow peg, interspersing his war experiences in the navy with shots of his wife and kids back at home. At the end his Destroyer gets sunk by a little white peg and he drowns. Over the closing shot of his funeral, it says THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE DOING EVERY TIME YOU PLAY THE "GAME" BATTLESHIPS.

That would be awesome for an animated short film, but stretching that concept into a two hour movie may yield less-than-great results.

How about this: Battleship vs. Snakes & Ladders. I can see it now: Snakes On A Boat.

It'll make Jerry Bruckheimer look like Werner Herzog, chances are.

Julia - Tilda Swinton as an alcholic who gets embroiled in a kidnapping. Kinda drawn-out, but great plot and well-acted.

City Slickers. I love Billy Crystal's humor.

Just Friends. Tolerable.

Batman Returns. Quite solid, but The Joker was definitely a better villain than The Penguin. Fortunately, Catwoman easily made up for this dip in antagonistic quality.

Angels and Demons. They kinda left out Alot from the book and it were never that great to begin with.

The Bourne Identity

Hadn't seen this in a long time...these movies are awesome and, I think, had a big influence on the action movie industry in terms of a change from cheesy action-packed affairs to gritty, realistic, and intense. Just take a look at the new James Bond movies and even Batman Begins/The Dark Knight.

District 9 - makes you sad and also blows shit up real good! Great film.

Inglourious Basterds - Tarantion's Best since Pulp Fiction? I really, really liked it. Glad to see he's back to writing long-winded half-meaningless conversations that are actually engaging, as opposed to ong-winded half-meaningless conversations that are an affront to the ears. Glad to hear not one utterance of the n-word as well.

JCVD - well that was weird. But quite good. Get the feeling it could have been something slightly more though. And what the hell, JC acting a bit? Actually emoting? Wonders never cease.

Speed. An awesome action/disaster film. One of my favorites of the 90's.

I Love You Man - Hilarious. I love how unassuming and normal the Apatow movies feel.

Also, caught The Karate Kid on the free movies section of my on demand. I had forgotten the following in the 15 or so years since I saw it last:

-How hot Elisabeth Shue was/is
-How much of a crybaby bitch Daniel was
-Johnny Lawrence = best stereotypical villain ever
-How completely awesome Mr. Miyagi was
